Biography

A lot of people in Canada haven’t heard of Barry Canning, but a lot of people have. With his 5th album “Light of a Setting Sun” released in 2011, it won’t be long before lots of other people will know him. Originally from Newfoundland, this multiple East Coast Music Award nominee and recent recipient of the prestigious Arts Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Artist of the Year award, has been on the road for over 20 years, has opened for international acts such as Bryan Adams and America, and has hosted the Juno Songwriters Circle with Ron Sexsmith on his right, and Daniel Lanois on his left. Barry has also been a part of a number of East Coast Music Award songwriter circles, and appeared on the last fully televised ECMA Awards show. His last album, “Last Man Standing”, produced by Great Big Sea’s front man Alan Doyle, garnered great success on the east coast, winning both album and song of the year at the Music Newfoundland and Labrador Music awards . “Light of a Setting Sun”, produced by east coast musician/producer extraordinaire Cory Tetford, has taken this troubadour in a new direction, straying away from smooth acoustic pop songs, to a more alt-country/Americana feel, with pedal steel taking the spotlight next to Canning’s unmatchable vocal. These new 12 songs are deep rooted, from the heart songs, and anyone listening will no doubt get caught up in the bareness and emotion of the lyrics and melodies. Along with two co-writes with Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle (Time Turns Around and The Other Side), the album features stellar musical performances from Chris Ledrew (Brothers in Stereo) on pedal steel, Cory Tetford (Crush) on guitar, Paul Kinsman (Ron Hynes) on keys, Alan Doyle (Great Big Sea) on bouzouki and vocals, Chris Church (Jesse Cook) on violin, Ray Legere (Michelle Shocked, The Rankin’s) on fiddle and mandolin, and Dean Parks (Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel) on dobro and guitar. Even though Barry has been compared to artists such as Jackson Browne, Ryan Adams, Chris Rea, and even Billy Joel, his vocals and sound is unique. One just needs to listen. The song writing on “Light of a Setting Sun” is his best, laying his life out on the line to be reflected in the soul of any listener.

Time Turns Around

Written By: Barry Canning Alan Doyle

Time Turns Around
B. Canning/A. Doyle

Time has a way of rearranging
The things we love and the things we doubt
While the bonfire is blazing
We can’t imagine it burning out
Burning Out

Minds are made for changing
We can smile at what we once grieved
In a while your heart can reconcile
If you let yourself believe

Chorus
You can see it every morning when a different day is dawning,
And the Walls have come tumbling down,
In every stationary notion, every stubborn emotion that
Time Turns Around
Time Turns Around

Through the eyes of a child life is amazing
With Champions all on parade
But our vision of Stars can grow hazy
And the colors can all fade to grey

Surely eyes can be opened
And we mourn the missteps that we made
It takes a moment, a day, or a lifetime
To see the error of our ways

Chorus

How illusions are shattered
And rules that once mattered
Become easy to break
How the wrong becomes right
As Time sheds some daylight
On the nights of our mistakes

I could never have imagined
You and I in a sweet summer dance
Should have known there'd be heartache
Should have known there was always a chance

Two Ships

Two Ships
B. Canning 2010

I love how you move dancing to the groove
In your short black dress
You don’t try to impress
You got nothing to prove

I been trying to reach into you
Slip through your cracks
But you hold me back
Like you got something to lose

Two ships sail on one ocean
But one will soon be gone

Into the light of a setting sun
As the day is nearly done
I watched you slip away
To save your love for another day
You turn and run

You never wake when the day breaks
You like to stay in bed
Make love instead
You love to give and take

When it gets real you’re quick to conceal
That place in your heart
Where things fall apart
But you can’t reveal

Two ships sail on one ocean
But one will soon be gone

Into the light of a setting sun
As the day is nearly done
I watched you slip away
To save your love for another day
You turn and run
Without a doubt you turned me inside out
With your wandering eyes
And those long goodbyes
I’ll have to do without

Two ships sailed on one ocean
And now one of them is gone

Into the light of a setting sun
As the day is nearly done
I watched you slip away
To save your love for another day
You turn and run
You turn and run

Don't Write Me Off

Written By: Barry Canning

Don’t Write Me Off

I know I haven’t been around too much
I’ve been lost in a dream
Please give me some time to get in touch
Don’t write me off

Nobody said there’d be days like these
When you find it hard to get up
But I think I’m slowly getting off my knees
Don’t write me off

Can you wait a little longer
For me to get a little stronger
In time, I’m going to be fine
So don’t write me off
So don’t write me off

I hope you don’t think you’re not on my mind
That’s how I get through
I wouldn’t want to get left behind
Don’t write me off

I’ve never been good at letting things out
Guess I let it go too long
But I’m on my way back I got no doubt
Don’t write me off

Can you wait a little longer
To get a little stronger
In time, I’m going to be fine
So don’t write me off
So don’t write me off

Killing Me

Killing Me
B. Canning

You just might leave me for dead
Broken pieces on the ground
But you’re a book that has got to be read
Your love is killing me
Your love is killing me

You make me feel so crazy
But then again you make me so sane
Never satisfied but so amazing
Your love is killing me
Your love is killing me

At night I ly awake
Rather think of you than sleep
I smile when the sun breaks
I’ll see what your love gives and takes

I would bleed just to love you
Vanish without a trace
When you make me weak it never comes too soon
Your love is killing me
Your love is killing me

Secret Love

Written By: Barry Canning

Secret Love

I kissed her mouth one cold and rainy night
In a dark bedroom out of her friend’s sight
I told her I loved her She said she loved me too
Sharing headphones our eyes our only view

In the morning she drove me to the train
I kissed her mouth as I got out in the rain
What we started we knew it couldn’t last
But every minute would always go to fast

Is blood thicker than wine
Is love stronger than time
We were Adam and Eve taking the fall
Is a secret love better than no love at all?

We learned how to love in the front seat of her car
Listening to the radio and falling under stars
The love we were making could never be undone
Hiding in shadows and always ready to run

Is blood thicker than wine
Is love stronger than time
We were Adam and Eve taking the fall
Is a secret love better than no love at all?

The dream we were living we will never give back
Like every good story we let it fade to black
I never thought I’d have a price to pay
But she kissed his mouth before I walked away
