TWO MEN CAME TO CALL

Lyrics by Barry Golson © September, 2008

Two men came to call on us
Parked in front, beneath the chestnut
They got out and I could see
Their uniforms, crisp and pressed, but

There was something about the way
They paced slowly up the walk
Past the rose bed toward the door
Eyes ahead, they didn’t talk

I was at the window, washing up
After Friday’s evening meal
The water, hot and scalding
Seared my hands, I couldn’t feel

Chorus:
He’s coming home, coming home
Heard from him just days ago
One more tour of duty left
Then he’s coming home, I know

Wiped the counter, dried my hands
Dirty dishes, there’s a chore
Barely conscious, barely there
Heard the soft knock on the door

Opened up, and through the screen
Our two callers, tall and straight
Hats were tucked beneath their arms
Close the door, it’s not too late!

I waited for the words they’d say
Prayed to God they’d never come
Prayed to God for a mistake
Prayed to God, cursed Him some

Chorus:
He’s coming home, coming home
Heard from him just days ago
One more tour of duty left
Then he’s coming home, I know

The days beyond, a hazy dream:
A folded flag, murmured words
A bugle slowly playing taps
A gun salute, a flight of birds

Chorus:

He’s come home, he’s come home
To the place that he loved best
Home again, his final rest
And us? And then?
We try to start our life again.
