"Confront Magazine"

Back in June I was fortunate enough to sit down with the up and coming Montreal band “Basement Superheroes”. Their unique synth-pop sound helped them become the very first group to ever win “Can Your School Rock?” a battle of the bands competition that took place throughout the country. Since then they have been signed to Tab Records and are currently in the studio working on their debut album. The interview took place backstage at Club soda with Max Izzo(vocals/guitar/keyboard), Alex Izzo(drums/vocals) and Shawn Chemtov(bass/backup vocals). - Jenia

Bio

Basement Superheroes is a Canadian pop rock band formed in Laval, Quebec by Max Izzo (vocals, guitar) and younger brother Alex Izzo (drums and vocals) who were soon joined by Shawn Chemtov (bass guitar). The band initially started by playing high schools and small club dates, playing punk, they later leaned towards a new brand of pop that has defined their sound today. The band..s creative writing axis are the two Izzo brothers. Brought up by artistic parents, the mom an accomplished painter, the dad a record producer, the boys were performing as a duo as early as grade school, needing to be chaperoned in order to play club dates.

When Max Izzo befriended Shawn Chemtov in high school and found that they shared the same drive and interest in music, things started to move quickly. Shawn was the driving force the brothers needed to move ahead. Single-handedly spearheading a campaign to transform the young basement band into a serious unit, he instilled discipline and rigor by going after every contest, battle of the band and event that could help bring the band into prominence. In the winter of 2008, the band's song Blink and You'll Miss It was a finalist at Montreal's Virgin Radio songwriting contest. The following year the band entered a competition called CAN YOUR SCHOOL ROCK, (which was a contest that scouted the top high school bands) and after competing with 40 bands, in June of 2009, they were crowned winners representing Laval Liberty High School of the first ever "Can Your School Rock" competition. This brought about the recording of the bands debut album.

With plans for an upcoming album release, things are currently very exciting in the world of Basement Superheroes. The band has been busy writing their new material and in studio all summer and fall recording their debut album. The band inked a deal with label tab Records, distributed by the multi national Universal Music and sought the services of the seasoned veteran Paul Galati to head up management.
