Biography

With a fresh year in 2011 and 4 new singles ready for release, Basia Lyjak is a woman in control; she is a veritable supernova of songwriting and vocal talent poised to explode, putting a stranglehold on her eager existing fans and caught-off-guard new converts alike, leaving them rapt and thirsty for more, more, more!

10 years into her professional career, Basia has seen and learned a thing or two about her ever-changing and increasingly uncertain industry. From the glitz of generously funded development deals and girl groups, to living out of her car in order to record and release her next single, Basia has been personally and professionally privy to to the whole spectrum of the good and bad of being a musician.

“That's it!” says an uncharacteristically relaxed Basia. “Everyone has their two cents to offer to me: I should sing like this, write with that person, use this producer, focus on a different genre, wear different clothes – the list goes on and I can't please everyone. I'm here to write great songs, period, so I'm done with limiting myself to genres when every kid with an iPod has at least 50 different kinds of music on it! That's the mindset I was in when we went into the studio with these new songs – make them the best they can be, not cram them into a genre.”

The songs in question are 3 FACTOR-funded and sonically unalike tunes: the first, “Sunshine,” is a fun, girl-power cruising song for the open highway – a hood down, hot sun on your face, feel-good track that draws from Basia's early country roots and influences. The second single, slated for a summer release, is “Hero,” a universally relatable, goosebump-inducing power ballad that draws the listener physically into Basia's voice and emotion as she transcends from whisper to crescendo over haunting 12-string acoustic guitar.

“My grandfather taught me to sing from my heart and my gut, and my parents taught me about rock n' roll. One of my first jobs was babysitting country/bluegrass legends Caitlin Hanford and Chris Whiteley's son, Jesse Whiteley – and they showed me the purity and soul in country. People are always shocked when I sing country or blues because everyone's used to hearing my rock voice, and I really wanted to explore that other side of me with these new songs.”

The third song, “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” is a reminder that while Basia is a little bit country in her heart, she's still got rock n' roll coursing through her veins! A sexy, take-control, ultimate brush-off song, “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” will have you strutting and singing along with an extra bounce in your step! The fourth song of the bunch is the fruit of a collaboration with Yurko Mychaluk (Klooch, Nelly Furtado). “Sick N' Tired” is a feisty, hooky track that takes the grit and attitude of Canadian superstars like Three Days Grace and Finger 11 and puts a heavy, ballsy female rock vocal over it, proving that Basia has no problems keeping up with the big boys!

“I'm proud of where I've been and excited about where I'm going,” she declares, smiling, referring to her past releases - her debut EP, 'Basia Lyjak' (2002), her sophomore EP 'Writings on the Wall” (2007), and three stand alone singles, 'Don't Talk' (2008, also the subject of her first music video), 'What It Feels Like' (2009) and 'Never Wanted Anything' (2010). If these first few flourishes of colour in the aural kaleidoscope that is her arsenal of songs are any indication, Basia has no shortage of music to share with the world.

“When I sit down with a guitar by myself, country songs come out naturally, and I want people to finally hear them! On the flip-side, I have pop and rock demos that I want people to hear too – my goal is to keep writing, recording and releasing singles. Rather than one full-length CD every few years, I want to keep regularly releasing new songs -- basically, I don't want to give anyone the chance to stop listening!”

The live audiences who have been the guinea pigs for Basia's new songs seem to agree that all the things we've come to expect from, know and love about her are still intact: she is a petite, spitfire package of energy whose vocal range, colour and diversity isn't just a talent, but a necessary artistic and physical outlet that keeps her heavily charged circuits from overloading completely. To witness Basia's live performance or to hear her recordings makes it difficult not to feel the honesty of her delivery to the very core – her whole being is wrapped into her music, and to separate the two would be impossible.

“I don't have a life beyond music, and that's the truth. Everything I do is a means to an end, a way of getting to that next step, earning that next fan. If that means working bizarre jobs with insane hours and spending more time driving in my car than in my own bed and home, so be it! Bottom line, I'm living the dream, and that's the bigger truth!”

So, what are you waiting for?! “Sunshine” and "Sick N' Tired" are now available on

Plastic

Written By: B.Lyjak

Hey look at you
You think you’re special
Yeah look at you
You’re one of a kind
Hey look at you
You’re killing me, you’re killing me
Killing all of me, you

You’re all in my head, killing me with your words
Yeah you’re all in my head
Killing me with your

You’re like a bad disease
You’re just killing me
You’re like a bad disease
You’re just killing me

Hey look at you, you’re talking to him
Yeah look at you, you fake plastic pig
Yeah look at you, you’re one of a kind
You hide behind the lies

I don’t think that I can take this
Living naked, give me my bacon
Yeah you’re all in my head, killing me with your words
You’re all in my head, killing me with your words

You’re like a bad disease
You’re just killing me
You’re like a bad disease
You’re just killing me

I sit and I watch you falling
I wave bye bye and you say hi hi
No one cares, you’re just some guy
You look at me and you smile for all to see
Little pigs, don’t you know
This pig made me hope

You’re like a bad disease
You’re just killing me
(watching over me)

Stuttering

Written By: B.Lyjak

Stuttering in my head this noise inside
Takes me
Pulls me through the ringer, then I’m dry
I can’t sleep
All I wanna do is go ourside
Can’t sleep, can’t sleep

40 days and 40 nights
I tossed and turned, can’t sleep at night
You leave me restless
I’m waiting for the phone to ring to finalize this shit I’m in
Leaves me restless

Time to get these bags up off my eyes
They can’t see
All the pain and tiredness I bring with me
Will you grant me room to live my way
To fulfill my childhood dreams
Won’t you take me, take me

To where I want and where I’ll be
What I want is what I need
You leave me restless
I’m waiting for my phone to ring, to finalize this shit I’m in
You leave me restless

Over and over again, you tell me
Everything’s going to be okay and
All of my lonely days will bring me
Everything, everything, everything

For 40 days and 40 nights
I tossed and turned, can’t sleep at ngiht
You leave me restless
I tossed and turned by the telephone
You’re never coming home
The phone now rings, but pardon me
I’m ragging against your machine
Yeah you leave me restless

Bye Bye

Written By: B.Lyjak

Stand before you walk away
Don’t put your hands into my face
You’re so far gone, yeah you’re miles away
So you pick your bags up and you walk away

Bye bye
It’s your turn to cry
Bye bye
Now right your lies
Bye bye
You should wonder why
You said goodbye

Crawl before you come this way
Don’t throw your shit into my face
You’re so far gone, yeah you’re miles away
Now you realize why you walked away

Bye bye
It’s your turn to cry
Bye bye
Now right your lies
Bye bye
You should wonder why
You said goodbye

Standing in the pouring rain watching all the birds that sing
I don’t wanna be here, I don’t wanna be there
You’re miles, you’re miles away and I touch my head
I’m here okay, yeah
Then I go and I go away and I find a nice place just to get away
So I sit back and I drink champagne
I say bye bye

Chorus X 2

Lies

Written By: B.Lyjak

Who are you?
Why are you here?
I haven’t seen you
It’s been about a year
I feel like melting
And I feel like melting

Did I hurt you?
Misconstrue you?
Made you wonder what I’ve done to you
You feel so bad
Oh how so said
You should have listened why I was crying out

Your eyes
Your eyes they lie to me
Your eyes
Your eyes they lie to me

Asking you to walk away
Save it for another face
You broke me, controlled me
Did what you wanted to
I don’t forgive you
These thoughts in my head

I’m running, I’m running
I won’t let you inside , I won’t let you in
I’m running, I’m running
Out of your eyes
Your eyes

And if I hate you
Well then I’ll get through
Cause your eyes lie
Cause your eyes lie

Did I see you
I thought I did
I won’t feel you
These thoughts in my head

Torn

Written By: B.Lyjak

I don’t want you to fade away
Breaks my heart to see you this way
Every night of every day
I pray

Paranoid to let you go
Sick inside, a helpless soul
And to trap you in would kill the best of me
So go and wander free and take this from me

Everything inside of me breaks
Everything inside of me takes
You can’t hurt me, you can’t hurt me

I believed in love
But all I love now I hate
It gets me through

Something’s in my head and it’s tripping me out
I don’t know what it is but I wants to come out
You left me broke and stranded
Now I’m left empty-handed
This ride’s coming to its end
We are sober once again
These walls keep closing in and I am sinking

Everything inside of me breaks
Everything inside of me takes
You can’t hurt me, you can’t hurt me

Everything inside of me breaks
Everything inside of me takes
You can’t hurt me, you can’t hurt me

Don't Talk

Written By: B.Lyjak/K.Riabko

Beat down in the morning
Crowded again
Sucked into a conversation
I’ll never win

Your aggression is a weapon
Why you tryin’ to hurt me?
Your illusion is confusion and it’s killing me slowly, slowly

Baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk to me
You make it so hard, make it so hard, make it so hard for me to breath

Caught up in the sweet talk, laughing away
Yeah I was pulled into a false attraction and I threw my love away
Sick of wishing you would listen when you look right through me
I’m tired of waiting for the day when you can say you’re sorry, so

Baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk to me
You make it so hard, make it so hard, make it so hard for me to breath
I never know why I stuck around
Time it passes us by so come around
‘round

Baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk to me
You make it so hard, make it so hard, make it so hard for me to breath
Baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk, baby don’t talk to me
You make it so hard, make it so hard, make it so hard for me to breath

Lalalalalalala
I’m sick of hearin’
Lalalalalalala
I’m sick of feelin’
Lalalalalalala
Won’t you ever
Lalalalalalala
Come around

What It Feels Like

Written By: Basia Lyjak

You tell me that I’m wasted (wastin')
In a superficial life
You think that I’m chasing
Too much this time
Tell me what would make you happy?
Would you like to see me crawl?
Through a life of everlasting
Dreams that I have lost

You don’t hear me
You can’t heal me
The damage is done
There’s no turning back this time
I needed your love
The damage is done
And you don’t know what it feels like

I bit my tongue to please you
And I never said a word
And now that I don’t need you
You’re going to feel my hurt

You don’t hear me
You can’t heal me
The damage is done
There’s no turning back this time
I needed your love
The damage is done
And you don’t know what it feels like
Don’t know what it feels like

What about the times when I begged you please, please help
You walked away and left me crying lost inside myself

You don’t hear me
You can’t heal me
The damage is done
There’s no turning back this time
I needed your love
The damage is done
And you don’t know what it feels like

Never Wanted Anything

Written By: Basia Lyjak / Norm Sabourin

Never Wanted Anything

(B.Lyjak, N.Sabourin)

Not a sucker for your lovesick fantasy
I once was blind but now I see
I’m running on empty
Drowning me slowly
You said that you’d save me
Where are you now?

The walls they are falling
Can’t hide these feelings
I’m crashing and burning
Unlocks your empty silence
I never wanted anything
From you

Always told me about the things you could do for me
Trip me up, make me fall then watch me bleed
I’m running on empty
Drowning me slowly
I’m feeling so empty
Now I’m here to call you out

The walls they are falling
Can’t hide these feelings
I’m crashing and burning
Unlocks your empty silence

I never wanted anything
I never needed anything
I never wanted anything
From you
I never wanted anything from you
I never wanted anything from you
(From you)
