Bio

Batala New York City is comprised of all women. It was started in January 2012 by Stacy Kovacs in response to the lack of access for women to learn to play a drum in NYC. We are a community band with a mission to teach any woman regardless of musical experience to play the powerful rhythms of samba reggae while encouraging self expression and self confidence. We bring a type of music that doesn't exist in New York City. We thrive on exposing a wider audience to this alluring music and on engaging as many people as possible in the culture of Northeast Brazil.
Batala was founded in 1997 by Giba Goncalves, a Brazilian musician studying music in Paris. He longed for his hometown sounds of Salvador de Bahia and started Batala percussion band. It quickly grew to 60 members and spread throughout Europe. IBatala now exists in 28 cities around the world. Giba writes all of the music. We all play the same arrangements, wear the same style of clothing, and play the same drums--all manufactured in Salvador de Bahia under a social program to provide jobs to many families.
