"Bauer EP Review"

Bauer shine so well because they’ve made some firm decisions about their sound. In a celebration of the more melodic concepts of the 1980’s so ably exploited by Delays, Thirteen Senses and Longview, this E.P. provides maybe an even better version of such proven material. “Connected” is a triumph of good songwriting and powerful, darkly tinged stadium rock, possessing the muted glamour of seminal acts such as Talk Talk. This is a very capable tune in its own right, but with the added sparkle of cleverly thought out guitar moments and the gentle yet strong vocal lines of Greg Mathews, it's among a rather special collection of songs. As such the first track isn’t alone in creating these impressions – “Don’t You Move” could easily be the lead track whilst “Indian Sign” is a dose of happy jangling carried along with plenty of morose, pleasing melodies. The happier drive of “Gone” underlines the fact that the bands expansive sounds are striving to create the perfect anthem on bigger stages – it’s an ambition that shouldn’t be difficult to fulfil.

"Bauer Single Review"

Having tried and failed to find much of interest in The Magic Numbers' new album beyond hit single Take A Chance, along came this release from emerging Indie band Bauer which is, quite honestly, one of the best releases of the year. The haunting voice of Greg Matthews plus Michael Guitar (guitar), Neil Treppas (bass) and Lee Bradbury (drums) is all the more exceptional having emerged from the North. I'd even go as far as to compare the impact with that of first hearing Keane, if that's not considered an insult these days.

Bio

"Remember how we stood in the rain - I feel as though it’s starting again.”

Bauer have re-bottled the magic from their previous Bauer EP and first single ‘Starting Again’ and returned triumphant from their studio sabbatical with a stunning debut album, due for release in Spring ‘10. Containing a mix of already-familiar radio classics and a clutch of brand new beguiling melodies, they have continued their track-record of only ever creating songs that would be a career high for others.

Undoubtedly, there was a happening the first time Bauer hit the studio; it followed a successful stint supporting Snow Patrol, The Ordinary Boys and The Bluetones amongst others. Working with record producer Steve Power (James, The Charlatans, Robbie Williams) the result was a prodigious combination of melody and power, borne of the same magical formula as that seen in their many bewitching live performances.

The first Bauer EP was released to rapturous acclaim by fans and industry alike, and promptly sold out all 1000 physical copies (it continues to sell on iTunes). Stacked with stunning tunes like ‘Connected’ and ‘Don’t You Move’, Bauer had arrived.

Nothing this infectiously melodic has been heard for a long time. With songs centred around pulsating synths, soaring guitar lines and the ethereal vocals of Greg Matthews, Bauer are most certainly a band of our time. For treading the line so skilfully between Indie and Pop, Alan McGee made sure Bauer were played on Radio 1. But the band haven’t stopped there - making the fullest use of iTunes, MySpace and Facebook and with almost an album’s worth of tracks on Reverbnation, they are working to ensure their music is available to the audience it was destined for, and through this they have already garnered heavy rotation on national radio across mainland Europe.

Bauer have already rewarded their massive internet fanbase (10,000+ song plays a day on myspace and still riding high in the top artists chart) with free downloads and sneak previews of the debut record, in addition to music videos and the latest tour information. Their debut single garnered 1000+ presales, and, with promotion from the band alone, the single entered the UK Indie top 20 in its week of release, narrowly missing out on the main Top 40 chart.

One listen to the album will reveal that the mainstream radio and chart is not just where they belong - it’s the only place for these songs.
