"Adelaide Fringe 2012 review - Swinging Thru WW2"

FOUR AND A HALF STARS.

PUT on your dancing shoes and grab a GI as BecJM and Ellington's Heirs present Swinging thru WW2 at the Big Slapple.

From the first number everyone was bouncing in their seat, including pianist Jason Hammonds. It was only a matter of time before the first couple took to the dance floor, which didn't seem big enough by the final number. BecJM did an excellent job on lead vocals, helped occasionally by Hammonds and her Shoo Shoo Mammas Emma Lyndon and Ali Durham. The rest of the band were also amazing and it's no wonder their two nights at the Fringe have sold out All that was missing from the night was an air raid siren.

"BecJM and Ellington's Heirs at Wittunga Under the Stars Review"

BecJM and Ellington's Heirs reprise their 2011 hit show Swinging Thru' WW2, featuring swing music from the 1940s, as part of the 2012 Adelaide Fringe on Saturday 10th March and Sunday 18th March, both at 8pm.

It is a big nostalgia trip for anyone who loves the age of swing music, or a fantastic opportunity to introduce yourself to this particular style of jazz.

On the other hand, anyone who appreciates music that is well played, by superb musicians, should find a reason to go to one of these gigs. Having seen the band headline at the recent Wittunga Under the Stars event, I can certainly vouch for their faultless performance there.

The set played at Wittunga covered broader styles and periods than the World War II, swing genre theme of the Fringe show. However, the joyous playing on display there will come through even more as swing, by definition, is a get up and dance style of music.

BecJM has a wonderful voice that complements, and is complemented by, the drums, double bass, piano, trumpet, clarinet, and saxophones of Ellington's Heirs. Her stage persona is one that clicks with an audience and you will find yourself unable to resist enjoying the show.

The Fringe show will be at the 48 Lounge in The Big Slapple venue on North Terrace in the city. A dance floor is available, which will allow the audience to take its toe-tapping to another level of expression. - WeekendNotes, David Francis, Feb 2012
