Every year one band stands out as being the best, most fun, most cheerfuly delightful act and not always the ones one expects. For me it was Becks and the Bullets this year, and for many others too, young and old.

METRO REVIEW

"The idea of Alex Turner forsaking the Artic Monkeys to start a ska-punk band might send shivers down a few spines, but the reality might not be too hideous, if Becks and the Bullets are anything to go by.
A bunch of keen Yorkshire folk playing jazzy,brass-heavy pop and punkish pop-rock,The Bullets are headed by Becky Roberts. The singer-guitarist seems to fancy herself as a female equivalent of the Monkeys frontman, penning tracks that examine the minutiae of small-town life with a precise eye.Judging by their material so far Becks and the Bullets are worth keeping an eye on.
Mind you, they're not an act you'd take your mother to see. Check out Girl packs more innuendo into a five-minute pop song than you'd expect to find in an entire Carry On Film, and Roger is Fantastic ( even though he's made of plastic) is a filthy ode to a woman's best friend that would make many an indie boy blush.
It's not all sauce, though; Our Last Waltz is an insightful look at break-ups, while Time captures the excitement and frustrations of a night on the town in a way that Turner would be proud of, only with added ska action. And is that really such a bad thing?"

"The Wardrobe Leeds"

BECKS and the BULLETS
In The Wardrobe, Leeds.
8th of May 2008.

This was only the second gig for Becks and the Bullets, who played to a good size crowd at the Wardrobe in Leeds. Leeds and West Yorkshire can currently boast of having the some of the best bands and artists and here comes the next band to join them.
Fronted with a girl lead singer/guitarist who's banter was second to none when it came to keeping the audience's attention between songs.
Now Becks and the Bullets were a well balanced easy to listen to poppy jazz and at times raunchy outfit that have great future potential, the sixties with a modern touch. for only their second gig they impressed me no end. I do hope these guys get the success they deserve because I certainly want to hear these guys play again, and soon.

Becks and the Bullets are so different to other bands due to their engaging stage show. There's so much energy on stage and the band members are not only technically great musicians enabling the band to take trips into a massive range of styles such as ska/reggae/rock/jazz but they are also all entertainers. You do not know where to look on stage as there is so much going on. While playing festivals this summer the band were recieving comments such as "by far the best band I've seen all weekend" and "you should be the biggest band around by next year". This was not only from the audience but the festival organisers and even the technicians (I know a compliment from a techie, but it's true). The band has an unusual line up and although insanely catchy songs, the songs are extremely well crafted. Becks's songwriting influences range from The Muppets to Joni Mitchell and being brought up by a mother who is a singer and father who is a comedian it's no wonder she feels so at home in this fun band.
