"Introducing Bed People"

By Ryan on Friday, August 16th, 2013
Bed People is a hip-hop / electroclash group, comprised of Pussy J, Pilly Poppins and Prix Teen.

Below is their music video for “Raunch Dressing,” which is NSFW, so keep your speakers low.

Bed People play their debut show tonight at The Blue Note in Oklahoma City with Colourmusic and Z Trio. - Oklahoma Rock

"Sam Chown of Zorch/Shmu mention in interview with OKC.net"

OKC.NET: Can you tell me a little bit about the other bands playing with you that night, like did you know them before this date, and if so how did you guys come to find each other’s music?

CHOWN: "Bed People is Grace Gordon’s dirty, fun rap project. I’ve never seen them live, but I’m very excited to see how they shred live. Check out this video, it’s so raunchy that Grace has been disowned by her boyfriend’s rents! I’ve never seen Eureeka either, so we’ll all be new to each other!"

If you didn’t catch it the first time, Chown said this got Gordon disowned by her boyfriend’s parents, so think probably NSFW if you happen to be reading this in a cubicle somewhere with a mouth-breather, middle management type lurking around looking for subordinates to shame/write up. If this doesn’t apply to you, dig in. - OKC.net

"Sound Exposure: The Norman Music Festival Field Guide"

"I’m not going to write out a separate hip hop list, but Josh Sallee, Jabee, ADDverse Effects and Bed People should be ones to watch if that is your thing. Bed People is the only female-fronted group in this handful of acts mentioned. Grace Gordon’s “Meet Pussy J” is infectious and raunchy. I’ve seen them live with friends, the group I was with wasn’t sure what to make of Bed People at first, but they were completely won over by the end of their set. If you liked this TOTALLY NSFW track, listen to “24 Hour Party People.” - OKC.net

Bio

Bed People Motto: Dance. Smoke. Fuck. Sleep.

Bed People is a super group born out of the efforts of Pussy J and Pilly Poppins (also in Softaware, Feathered Rabbit, Larry Chin), featuring members Dokey Pinehead (also in DEERPEOPLE), Cootie Wang (Also in Junebug Spade, Larry Chin and Feathered Rabbit), The Beatkeeper (of Prix Teen and Brother Bear) and Tummy T (of Prix Teen and Brother Bear). Pussy J started Bed People as a tongue-in-cheek response to the hyperbole and misogyny in modern day, mainstream hip-hop. By flipping the script, Pussy J's message is meant to empower people from every walk of life, and elicit comedy from entertainment. Bed People combines clever lyrics, social commentary, faux inflated egos and the incredible beatmaking skills of Pilly Poppins for a sound and live performance experience unlike anyone else's. The fact that they're hip-hop without a laptop and perform with full instrumental arrangements means they're doing something that no other hip-hop act in Oklahoma is doing.

In real life, Pussy J is Grace Gordon, a media personality in Oklahoma City with a radio show (The Oklahoma Rock Show) on The Spy FM and KOSU Radio. Gordon is also venue manager of The Blue Note, and a local booking agent and advisor to music festivals and concert series around the city. Gordon's music industry knowledge has fast-tracked Bed People to success. Bed People's first show ever was opening for Colourmusic (Memphis Records), and were the first local band to ever play The Womb (owned by The Flaming Lips). They have also played with Horse Thief (Bella Union Records), ADDverse Effects, Jabee (Murs316 Records), Shmu (ATX) and many other bands. They have also opened for cult-favorite Turquoise Jeep twice, and headlined the Blackwatch stage at Norman Music Festival (2014) at only their sixth show ever. They have been embraced by the established hip-hop community in Oklahoma, having collaborated with Jabee, Frank Black, and Fiji of ADDverse Effects, while Pussy J has appeared in two of Josh Sallee's (Pairadime Music Group) music videos in 2014 ("Switch Lives" and "Master Plan").

Instead of releasing an album, or doing the traditional media or social media pushes, Bed People chose an alternate route by releasing song after song on soundcloud and letting momentum build by word of mouth, and fan interaction. They pack out every show they play, including their debut appearance opening for Colourmusic and have always carefully curated their performances.

2015 is shaping up to be a big year for Bed People. They are working on their first full-length album, tracking at Redwood Studios (owned by Midlake, friends of the band), Blackwatch Studios (BRONCHO, Sufjan Stevens, Graham Colton), and Hand-built Recording Studios. They will be engaging in a live session taping at Blackwatch Studios during Norman Music Festival, headlining main stage at Schwarzstock, playing the Opolis/Blackwatch stage at Norman Music Festival and appearing as Johnny Polygon's backing band on Main Stage at Norman Music Festival. Their first tour is planned for October 2015.
