Bio

In the midst of hicksville rural Manitoba, Canada, three siblings each decided to pick up a guitar and sing about their world. The result, Behind the Creaking Door. Sometimes brash social and political commentary. Sometimes quirky lyrics. Always aggressive acoustic guitars.

Ben, Rheanna and Dustin Melnick record their music in their grandmother’s hundred year old farmhouse. Green shag carpet on the floor, cords all over the place and walls papered with ads from 60s and 70s Life magazines. It started with SM58s mic-ing everything, including the bass drum fixed up with a Radioshack crossover to get extra low end. They’ve used 99 cent microphones found at Value Village. They’ve taken their cymbals to the garage to hand hammer them themselves.

Dustin quotes lines from movies. Ben does impressions of Kermit the Frog and Sylvester Stallone. Rheanna doesn’t like pancakes. They usually don’t talk in the third person.

Behind the Creaking Door’s first album, 12 miles from the edge, is an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the light punk of ‘School Boy’, to the folky sound of ‘Rivers of Babylon’ to the more experimental ‘Truth’, a drum/vocal track.

The new album, planned to be recorded in the spring, will rock your socks.

Their live show sometime consists of 3 acoustics and/or a bass, and the three of them singing their faces off. Other times drums, bass and guitar all amped up. The band has gotten their show together and play it every chance they get; from doing shows with hardcore metal and punk bands, to battle of the bands, to playing in some kid’s field at a kegger fest in the country.

The pirate/internet radiofreedauphin.com has been a tremendous support for the band. Playing all of their songs, plugging their shows, featuring behind the creaking door as the ‘artist of the week’ for over two weeks and running an hour and a half long interview/feature 3 times. Two local commercial stations, CKDM Dauphin and 94.1 Yorkton, have also each picked up a song from ‘12 miles from the edge’. CKDM has ‘fire and rain’ into regular rotation.
