Biography

"Finally, a world awakes to the charms of Belinda Bruce" – “ The Globe and Mail

Charming listeners with her sultry-sweet voice, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Belinda Bruce made her debut on the music scene in 2005 with the much-loved chamber-folk enchantment Dream Yourself Awake, which received international praise and a few domestic award nominations, including:

Favourite Folk Artist – 6th Annual Independent Music Awards, 2006
Best New / Emerging Artist – Canadian Folk Music Awards, 2005
Best Solo Artist – Canadian Folk Music Awards, 2005

"An astounding labor of love." – New Music Canada
"Dream Yourself Awake introduces Bruce as a master of grown-up lullabies and a worthwhile addition to the female singer-songwriter tradition." – Chartattack.com

Waltzing from plucky folk to a more electric rootsy twang, Belinda formed a new outfit called The Tawny Stars with some of Vancouver's best musicians. Now an alt-country queen, she released her celebrated sophomore album The Good Life (Bee-Side) in 2007.

"[The] songs explore a world of thrift shops, cheap apartments, blackouts and bruised hearts, and the languid, world-weary feel of Bruce's vocals bring them to authentic life." – Exclaim!

Belinda is currently assembling a new album of folk-pop gems with a stellar posse of Vancouver musicians and producer Jon Wood (Cam Penner, Dave Newberry, Chariots of Eggs, Rodney Decroo, Herald Nix, Trucker's Memorial).

*****
Belinda has performed at several clubs, festivals and tours across the country including NewMusicWest, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Canadian Music Week, Vancouver International Film Festival, Western Canadian Music Festival, RanchFest, the Grrrls with Guitars Tequila & Tattoos Tour, Vancouver's CityFest and Bluebird North.

Falling Star (Dream Yourself Awake)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Album: dream yourself awake

“FALLING STAR”

You said I like your body like this
a little tanned, a little skinny, a little undressed
I said I like your body, too
but I guess this is it for me and you

You belong to a different set of rules
The lie that governs you is not something I thought I’d do
but I like the sun when you’re around, yes
What do you suggest

Chorus (1)
I can feel you coming
like the heat before the rain
In your arms I am melting like a fool’s gold

With all the time I’ve spent alone
thinking about the dangers and securities of home
I thought about where I should be
and it’s gone

Chorus (2):
I can feel you coming on
like a full moon night
In your arms I am sinking like
a falling star

Part of me just wants to protect you from the cold
and from growing old with no one to love
and I’ll admit that when I’m with you,
it’s like the night, the whole dark night is in bloom

Then you wear that old blue flannel shirt
smells like coffee, cigarettes and dirt
In the fading light of a weary train
I see your face again

Chorus (2)

Underground (Dream Yourself Awake)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

BELINDA BRUCE
Album: dream yourself awake

“UNDERGROUND”

You say you’ve got no place to go
always caught in the traffic flow
you’re stuck

Follow me, we’ll walk around
take a trip to the underground
and see through the darkness

Dig down deep, you’ve got the tools
and throw away that book of rules
you’re free

The garrison I built around me
came crumbling down when somebody found me
inside the darkness

Chorus
There are lots of buried hearts down there
and words people don’t want to hear
but I like a place that bears the face of the truth
The underground (4X)

You say you’ve got no place to go
always caught in the traffic flow
you’re stuck

Follow me, we’ll walk around
take a trip to the underground
and see

Heaven Knows (The Good Life, 2007)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Heaven Knows
Belinda Bruce

What’s up the road, heaven knows
But I won’t stop driving when I’m this close

If a flower grows in winter’s throes
It’s a goddamn miracle that only heaven knows

Chorus:
If I ever believed in something more than this
Oh well, heaven knows

Inside the party host is a sad little ghost
Trying to speak up before glasses clink in a toast

And all the old people at their windows, chasing shadows
Of the ones they used to love, now only heaven knows

Chorus:
If they ever believed in something more than this
Oh well, heaven knows

What’s up the road, heaven knows
But I won’t stop driving when I’m this close

Rust (The Good Life, 2007)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Note: In this song, I wanted to speak to our culture’s obsession with youth and anti-aging (especially for women) and denial of the natural course of things. There is beauty in maturity (wrinkles are not just creases on our face, but a sign of wisdom, humour and experience!) and in knowing when it’s the right time to let something go.

Rust
Belinda Bruce

Some days I’m so tired of putting up a brave front
don’t want to wake up
And some days I expire long before the due date
you wither fast when you bloom late

Should I let myself rust

I found a note inside an old philosophy book
In words we sometimes hide, but you never thought I’d look
I know worlds turn on a sweet melody
I’m not sure if that song is coming from me

Should we let this love rust
fade, like the beauty of an old car in a junkyard grave
rust…

Some things are so backward
We hurry up to grow up and cry when wrinkles start to show up
Are we hardwired to try to erase
the character you find in an old wizened face

Should we let ourselves rust
fade, like the beauty of an old car in a junkyard grave
Oh rust…fade
dust to dust, we all turn to ashes someday

Should we let ourselves rust
fade, like the beauty of an old car in a junkyard grave
Oh rust…fade
dust to dust, we all turn to ashes someday

Dirty Little Secret (The Good Life, 2007)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Dirty Little Secret
by Belinda Bruce

Some things I’ll never tell
come heaven or hell
best left back in that schoolyard
But I drag around
my thorny crown
digging deep into my head, where I keep

dirty little secrets
dirty little secrets
dirty little secrets

I’ve done the shopping malls
heard the frantic calls
of those out on the parapet
Someone’s waging war
and no one’s keeping score
and money keeps flowing past those

dirty little secrets
dirty little secrets
dirty little secrets

so honey close the blinds
what they can’t see they can’t find
and get down on the floor and show me something new
it’s our…

dirty little secret
dirty little secret
dirty little

dirty little secret
dirty little secret

Blackout (The Good Life, 2007)

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Blackout
By Belinda Bruce

My plane’s been grounded
I’ve been stranded
In a place so full I feel alone

My brain is hungry
my eyes are tired
got no clothes and no home

Where’s my angel
Where’s my angel

Darkened hotel room
blackout city
At another time this candlelight might seem pretty

You said you like danger
you like strangers
keep me warm ‘til the morning, the bed is empty

Where’s my angel
Where’s my angel

My plane’s been grounded,
I’ve been stranded
In a place so full I feel alone

My eyes are hungry
my brain is tired
got no clothes and no home

Where’s my angel
Where’s my angel

Electric

Written By: Belinda Bruce

When I was electric I could turn you on
when every day was counted as a form of devotion

Such small accidents of manners and sense
tore down the tense of our happiness

Let me still be the one
Let me still be the one

Now we live in this city of glass
hand to mouth in this moon palace

Is this the way, the progress of love
The bend in the river that we never recover from

Let me still be the one
Let me still be the one

Let me still be the one
Let me still be the one

Labyrinth

Written By: Belinda Bruce

Caught inside the labyrinth
it’s hard to find my breath
beautiful and sinister
walls of eyes and gossamer
round and round and round
the dark playground

Underneath this starless night
can’t find our way back
when did we stop, when did we fall
when did we get lost inside it all
round and round and round
feet don’t touch the ground

Caught along the serpentine line
between love and hate
Hold my hand, hold my fate
Let’s hop over the gate
round and round and round
the dark playground of sound

Home

Written By: Belinda Bruce

The lights sparkle so pretty
The backdrop of the city skyline
I’m feeling fine

Gliding past familiar sights
Weary feet, but I feel just right
Take me there, take me there

Home

Up and down and all around
Listen and you’ll hear the sound
Of something true

Every road leads back to you
The twists and turns of the avenue
On my way, on my way

Home

Let’s paint the town in me and you
What have we got to lose

Home

The lights sparkle so pretty
The backdrop of the city skyline
I’m feeling fine

Gliding past familiar sights
Weary feet, but I feel just right
Take me there, take me there

To places that I know so well
The faces, the enchanting smells
Bring me back, bring me back

Slow dance in the morning light
Break through to a brand new bright
A perfect day

Let’s paint the town in me and you
What have we got to lose…

Twisted Lullaby

Written By: Belinda Bruce

All the cups have woken up
and the newspaper is spread out
and the toaster is warming up
for another
for another
for another day

The clock rocks with its tick
and the flowers peek from their beds
and the dog practices its lick
for another
for another
for another
day that my heart won’t play the game

And the magazines fold
and the car engines go cold
and the last coffee has been sold
for another
for another
for another night

And the sky turns on the lights
and the guns crawl out of drawers
and the ghosts try on their pearly whites
for another
for another
for another
night that my heart won’t play the game

(Into “Blue Moon” by Rogers/Hart)

Blue moon, you saw me standing alone
without a dream in my heart
without a love of my own

Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You saw me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for

Fantasy

Written By: Belinda Bruce

I have this fantasy about you and me
No one can find us, we’ve left the world behind
So far away from prying eyes
Tousled in the covers, you know we’ve always been lovers

In my mind
Spend my time
Thinking about you

But I’m afraid of this big, dark love
This burning heart, this drunken dove must depart
So here I go, I’ll cloak my dreams
In shades of grey and brown and hope someday you’ll come around

In my mind
Spend my time
Thinking about you
The way you move and talk and groove

So let’s pretend tomorrow’s done
Today is all we have to live and love is all we have to give
I’ll follow you down that wayward path
Past everything we know is good
All the way into the black

Of my mind
Spend my time
Thinking about you
The way you move and talk and groove

In my mind
Spend my time
Thinking about you
The way you move and talk and groove

I have this fantasy about you and me
No one can find us, we’ve left the world behind

Stay

Written By: Belinda Bruce

I shouldn’t say anything, risk the words out on their own
walking in the world alone, a place they don’t belong
Looking out the window at the way the streets have changed
skies gone grey, the trees are weeping
and everything is rain

I want to keep it under glass
I want to hold you fast
Don’t want this crowd to wane
I want to be under the sun
(I wanna be) under the sun,
with you, will you stay?

Who will I be tomorrow, what was I yesterday
treading lightly on the earth or stomping my parade
Who’s there beside me, who’s in the picture frame
and would the image fade, the colours dissipate
if I never looked away

I want to keep it under glass
I want to hold you fast
Don’t want this crowd to wane
I want to be under the sun
(I wanna be) under the sun,
(I wanna be) under the sun,
with you, will you stay?

This cup’s running over, is this draining, is this over?
Still there’s the vagrant wonder in a clap of thunder
I’m still inside the dream
still inside the dream

Want to keep it under glass
I want to hold you fast
Don’t want this crowd to wane
I want to be under the sun
(I wanna be) under the sun,
(I wanna be) under the sun,
with you, will you stay?
