By Darryl Gregory

OK, so anyone that quotes Rilke in his liner notes has got to know something about poetry, about angst, about the questions of life and love. Our young poet, Ben Brittsan, definitely delivers with some really inspired lyrics that weave through his well thought out arrangements. The music throughout the CD surges and recedes like the waters along the shore of Lake Michigan, with Brittsan starting songs out quietly, pulling us in, then throwing us back in our seats as he sings lyrics like “You know if I was the Thunder I’d still rock your world”.

Brittsan refers to this CD as an “audible diary” of a relationship. I read this after listening to the album in total and thinking to myself that he must be writing about the same woman, so he definitely gets his point across. The album starts out with questions “So tell me what you wanna do- ‘cause I’m stuck in the middle of loving and hating you” and ends with similar questions “ ... did I do something wrong? I’m guessing that maybe yeah I did” “ ... you’ve got to admit we’re out of time – so what do you want me to do?” In between, he talks about needing more, the indecision of love-lust, the pain and regret of the wrong things said and the ultimate realization that this just isn’t working: “And now we’re both alone. Oh do you feel like I feel? Our hearts turned cold, an execution meal.”

The music runs in and out of pop rock and urban country. The acoustic guitar is definitely the driving force, but he’s not afraid to throw some wah guitar, B3 organ and pedal steel all in the same mix and come out with something really cool and original. Brittsan has gathered a really fine group of musicians to realize his arrangements and create a very big lush sound. Right in the center is Brittsan’s reedy tenor delivering the stories he wants us to look at and examine but without trying to find the answers.

Who We Are is one of those a rare finds in that ocean of indie music and definitely worth putting in anyone’s CD collection. And after listening to the last track on the CD, a one-take voice and guitar song entitled “Come Here," it would be safe to assume that Ben Brittsan puts on one hell of a live show as well.

City Lights

Just a guy whos had his heart broken many times and felt the need to write music as his therapy. These songs are what erupted from the mess of the tangled heart strings. Of course, Ben is a very happy guy now-a-days. :)
