"Latin Sans Limitations"

latin sans limitations
Kathryn Vercillo
Standing at the edge of his own musical boundaries and looking out at the horizon of possibility before him, Bendicion creates music so unique that he had to coin a new name for the genre.

The music, which he called mezclado (“mixed”), blends influences from genres including rap, rock, go go, dancehall, electronica, R&B and reggaeton.

The resulting sound is a creative, catchy beat which brings the world the bilingual message that Latin music can’t be limited by labels.

Bendicion was influenced by musicians including Public Enemy, N.W.A. and Slick Rick but was even more influenced by the socio-political situation he saw around him during his

D. C. youth. Growing up in the racially charged city, he developed an early interest in communicating about the issues around him through the music he was rapidly teaching himself how to play.

Because he was bringing something to the turntable that was cutting edge, responses to his music were mixed.

Refusing to alter his own musical perspective for the world, Bendicion created All Americano, a label and production center to spread mezclado to the general public. The timing is right: with kids today singing in Spanish and English along with the booming reggaeton movement, All Americano is now producing not only the work of Bendicion but also that of other upcoming Latin artists.

So is mezclado just for the Latin population? Hardly. Part of the attraction of the innovative blend of styles is that it serves as a bridge between various cultures, exposing fans from different mainstream music segments to the issues which are unique to the Latin American population. In our increasingly global environment, it serves to create a new space for a future of music which addresses the Latin cultural experience while not being limited to the Latin genre.

"Latin Explosion Review"

"Bendicion's Latin Explosion is just that - an explosion of Latin rap with clearly stated political views and a strong reggae backup. Excellent percussion beats and keyboards." - Bitchin' Entertainment

Bio

Influenced by the great innovators -- Public Enemy, Jimi Hendrix, Digital Underground,Miles Davis, Santana -- Bendicion has never stifled the spirit of music by the constraints of convention, but has nurtured it to be in itself a story. Originally from NOVA-DC, but also living and playing in New Orleans and New York, Bendicion has absorbed the diversity of the culture capitals, weaving his musical odyssey into the songs. From the CMJ in NY, to the Billboard Latin Conference in Miami, he is out there representing the american latin movement, with his Mezclado style. Presently Bendicion is touring the east coast; selling his EP, Latin Explosion.
