"Beneath the Sheets "Go Easy, It's My First..." (CD Review)"

Over the past week I’ve become a big supporter of Boston group Beneath The Sheets. The band formed in 2006 and have now released debut album "Go Easy, It’s My First…" on the band’s own label, Dirty White Sneaker Productions which they say is a “blend rock, dance, and hip-hop”. It’s not far off, and neither is their predication, “This is our year and we’re gonna rock it…hard.” Well it shouldn’t be anyway.

The album opens with self-proclaimed “pop-rock anthem” ‘December’. The quick, catchy rhythms soon infect your head. The vibrant guitars carry the song into the slightly more vicious sounding verse. “She said she still remembers, What happened in December, I told her that some things are better left unsaid.” The song really comes alive at the middle-8 though. Fiery lyrics aren’t overshadowed by the instruments as rip into the chorus for the last time.

Bettering it however is “the pre-Twilight, banger about a drunken vampire hook-up,” named ‘Two in the Morning’. Evan Gillis’ vocals are quality. It’s a song that really needs to be listened to on full volume, it really is a beast.

The album takes another step up into ‘Pistols’. Probably the best song on the album. As normal the introductions catchy as hell, and leads into a slightly more upbeat verse. It bursts into the chorus. “If you want to start a revolution like I want to start a revolution, say hey//raise your pistol to the sky and say hey.” The middle-8 is again the best part of the song, The guitars break it down but then… It builds back up. One of the best things about Beneath the Sheets is although they’re not amazingly different from the rest of the ‘pop-punk scene’ they can hold a tune, and don’t resort to shouting just after it goes out of their range.

From there it goes straight into ‘Cold Feet’ which follows the same pattern as the rest, slightly less enjoyable, but really, there are no bad songs on the album. ‘Brick and Mortar’ is slightly slower in tempo, but lacks no energy. Guitarists Albie and Myke, bassist Jeff and drummer Austin are great musicians, as showcased on the album. The whole band also contributes to song writing which makes for a fairly unique sound, albeit one restricted to the pop-punk genre.

‘X’s On My Calender’ has a darker meaning behind the fast paced song. “I feel like I’ve lost my soul//Only God knows I’m innocent.” It may be the best song by the quintet lyrically, ‘Marissa Moves’ however is not. Although not a poor song the quality of the overall album makes it seem as such. It definitely livens up towards the end, but the rest of it feels so clichéd.

‘She Gets Bored’ is my favourite on the album. Your body feels obliged to bop along. It’s a gorgeous composition. “She gets bored of me.” Is all the chorus needs, not really any deep meaningful insights. The secret to Beneath The Sheets is the accessibility of the songs. Everybody’s been through something like it, well… Maybe not vampire hook-ups or death of loved children (the topic of the closing track, but, somehow, they make it seem like you have.

‘Did You Know’ closes the album in the same style that it was opened. Quick, catchy rhythms, combined with beautiful melodies. Maybe not as accessible as others though, “And my mother screams, but he’s just 19//Can somebody please explain what’s happened to my boy?/And the doctor says ‘ma’am I’m so sorry//Sorry folks your only son is dead.’” They’ll probably draw comparisons to Boys Like Girls simply because of their geography, and if they’re a better, more aggressive version of them, then they might be right.

Bio

With a powerful rhythm section, ill guitars, and the unmistakable delivery of front man, Evan Gillis - Bostons' premiere pop-rock band, Beneath the Sheets, has created a sound and swagger that is both potent and unparalleled.
So far in their blossoming careers, the gentlemen in BTS have watched the entire catalog from their debut album, "Go Easy, It's My First..." be featured on shows such as MTV's The Challenge, VH1's Rock of Love and E!'s The Spin Crowd as well as be featured in many music and extreme sports magazines including Amp and Steez. Their first single, "Two in the Morning" has made a huge splash in the New England college radio circuit and they have shared the stage with bands like Foxy Shazam and Patent Pending. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the boys in BTS. With an ever growing fan base and the bands "take no prisoners" attitude, these experiences have only cemented the fact that their ultimate goal of world domination is very much an achievable one.

Beneath the Sheets has enjoyed success in television, magazines and on the college airwaves, and pride themselves on being a great band to see live. With hundreds of shows under their belt since 2009, these veteran showmen really know how to work a crowd. "Every one of us in this band lives to play shows" says guitarist Albie Landry III. "I know that sounds stereotypical, but it's true. We have a blast customizing our set for almost every show we play. Sets for us usually feature some pretty snazzy dance moves as well as a few current hip-hop and pop covers that have a BTS twist to them. It keeps people singing along with us and the synchronized dance steps really surprise people that may be seeing BTS for the first time." The band has performed at a wide variety of college campuses and some of the Northeasts' most prestigious music venues and dance clubs. These venues include Pete Wentzs' Angels & Kings in NYC, the world famous Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge, Mass and a sold-out Wilbur Theatre deep in the heart of Bostons' historic Theatre District.

Following the success of "Go Easy, It's My First..." and the NorthBeast mixtapes, BTS plans on heading into 2013 with a brand spankin' new EP to deliver to the masses. The aptly titled, "Forever Loud" EP, is being produced by Drew Thompson Hooke (Wiz Khalifa, Lions Lions, Glamour Kills), mixed by Dan Korneff (Paramore, Pierce the Veil, Forever the Sickest Kids) and mastered by Chris Gehringer (Lady Gaga, Drake, Rihanna).

The first single from Forever Loud is "She's Bad And She Knows It". With it's infectious beat and the un-mistakable delivery of frontman, Evan Gillis, "She's Bad and She Knows It", is a sass-tastic, dance-rock anthem that is sure to get people out their seats, turning up the volume, and setting their devices to repeat. "(She's Bad And She Knows It) was one of my favorite songs to record on the record," says drummer, Austin Bryant. "It's a track that's definitely going to get people up and moving around the room." The single is available via iTunes as we speak and there is an official lyric video for the track that you can view here. (http://bit.ly/161hVZc)

Be forewarned! BTS intends on hitting every club, party and festival they can in 2013 in support of the "Forever Loud" EP. Hide yo kids, hide yo mic and make sure to catch them when they come to your town!!
