"Music Up Close"

I’d like you all to meet Alan Brian Curtis

Alan comes to us from Tennessee, a state you would associate with world music. He combines Latin and World Beat rhythms offering up an Afro-Cuban-Puerto Rican-Carribean-Brazilian sound. It has the warmth of roots reggae with so much more. The guitar work is exceptional, but he also adds layers with synthesizer that would take a full orchestra to produce. He told me that his approach was “to use the available technology to produce as natural and organic sounding finished song as possible.” My favorite song is “Gracious,” which is an inspiring island gospel tune with a full backup chorus. He told me he plans to expand into techno/hip hop/dance/house/club productions, but currently he’s licensing a lot of his work

Bio

Though musically able to navigate in a diverse number of styles Alan's music gravitates toward a style of World Pop that draws from several Afro-Latin rhythmic elements. Other influences include the great vocal harmonies and stylings of Gospel, R&B & Soul and many of the great jazz players and guitarists over the last 70 years.

Alan is currently producing, writing and recording a number of projects. Though the majority of his efforts have always involved his original songs he is presently producing an EP of classic cover songs from the '60's. The twist is that they are all being done in a bossanova style and contain portions of spoken word by Bronx,NY DJ DubbZ. The project is on schedule for digital release in the fall of 2010.

In April 2009 he was one of several aritists featured in a Skope Magazine article on world music. Go here to read the article: http://skopemag.com/2010/04/15/music-up-close-april-2010

In the past year he has added remix artist to his musical experience. In December of 2009 he utilized his production skills and entered his first ever Remix Competition through Indabamusic.com. His salsified remix of T-Pains song "Take Your Shirt Off" placed 10th among close to one thousand remixes. To hear his 10th place T.Pain remix go here:

On May 10,2010 he was named the winner of the Weezer "Love Is The Answer Remix Contest". To hear his winning entry go here:

His winning remix will be included in an upcoming Weezer EP and he will also be co-writing a song with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer.

Since winning the Weezer competition he has garnered honorable mentions in a remix of Raheem DeVaughn's "I Don't Care" and Peter Gabriels classic '80's song "Games Without Frontiers".

He has also ventured into writing for Production Music Libraries "I find this sort of writing to be especially challenging because it can be very different than writing a 3 minute pop song. You also have to take on the role of producer, arranger, mix and mastering engineer and accomplish a broadcast quality product, so it really stretches me as an artist".
