"Nando Michelin Review"

[translated from Spanish]
“Benjamin Furman was my private student in Berklee College of Music. He is a very talented and dedicated musician. He is not just a great Jazz pianist, but his interests expand to the voice, the song and the Southamerican tradition. His music is varied, fresh and beautiful, intertwining rhythm from all the Southern Cone. I believe he can get to be an important voice of the Southamerican popular music, and an ambassador of the Southamerican song here in USA. Without a doubt he shined at Berklee as a member of a new wave of emerging Southamerican musicians that will provide a contribution to our music."

"Miguel Vera-Cifras reviews Benjamin's music"

Benjamin Furman, pianist, composer, singer, explorer of sonic worlds, poet and musician, is today one of the principal exponents of the new scene of Jazz in Chile, and one of the most promising sons of multicultural music. With only 25 years of age and one album, this young Chilean musician has exposed already a personal horizon inside the local Jazz scene, appearing as emerging figure among the new generations of the global music.

With a solid musical education, he hag began to wander inside of himself the cultural diversity that gives him life: Hebraic resonances, Latin American ones, Afro and Europeans elements, all these span affluently from his compositions, where diversity of musical genres flourish with wit, cleverness and devotion (Klezmer music, Argentinian Zamba, Preuvian Landó, Jazz, etc).

In his first album (Desde el jardín, 2014) he opens for us the doors of his imagination and personal sensitivity, coexisting a certain epic dimension with an impressionistic sensibility when dealing with his intimate family tales. A residency where the new and the old (tradition) coexist, the Western and the Eastern, the Afro-Peruvian, the South American, and the Jazzistic improvisation; a canvas where the colors dialogue with light and deep notes, layering at the bottom a originality where nothing is foreign, but yet everything seems new.

For Furman, jazz constitutes "a crossroads for the cultures of the world"; an identifier and creative platform, a space where the musician, inhabited by his multiple cultures and sensitivities, joins this game accompanied by a top level crew: Cristian Gallardo on the sax and flue, Cristobal Menares in guitar, Cristobal Massis in drums, Javier Cueto in percussions and Maximiliano Flynn in upright bass. And so, immigrant in his own body, Furman jumps effortlessly into the garden of his millenary childhood, inviting us to listen to his exquisite musical memory; "a melody that even before being born, I was already singing" he says.

Between premorden and postmodern, he opens for us his piano like a little music box where listening ("music is a way of listening" he says) makes itself heard. Host of the South, we shall be in the lookout for this new Benjamin of the Chilean Jazz.

Bio

Benjamin Furman is a songwriter, pianist and singer born in Santiago de Chile in 1991. He was born into a family of musicians, and his musical education began from early childhood. At 23 he completed his musical studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston with a degree in Piano Performance. Also since childhood Benjamin has been deeply involved in the craft of writing (as of today he has written three novels, one compilation of short stories and poems, and is a monthly columnist in two international online magazines).

In 2014 he releases his debut album "Desde el Jardín" as a leader (having had many as a sideman already). Although he had been performing since many years prior this recording gave birth to the Benjamin Furman Project, the musical proposal he develops ever since. He also joined forces with his brother Ruben Furman as his Perosnal Manager, a fruitful relationship that has already put Benjamin as a leader in many festivals in South America (Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay) as well as in the East Coast (Boston and New York). Ruben's career as Manager evolved as well, forming his company 'Medusa', with which he has represents important artists of Chile, New York and Israel.

In 2016 Benjamin released his EP "Luz de la Mañana" which continues the eclectic and fascinating musical concepts of the debut album but now with a stronger emphasis in Song and Poetry, leaning more towards a unique kind of 'Southamerican Folk'. The October 2016 Chile EP Release Tour proved a success, and a confirmation of Benjamin's potential as an emerging voice, and a deep and charismatic showman. This EP constitutes the core of what Benjamin will hopefully be presenting in 'South by Southwest' in 2017.

Benjamin's musical proposal is truly unique. He combines in his music elements from the traditions he himself came from: the Middle Eastern, Tango, Jazz, South American (Chile, Argentina and Peru, mainly) folklore and Folk traditions. His experience as a writer allows him to provide this eclectic yet tasty combination of sounds and colors with a deep poetic meaning. His music results in a celebration of difference, immigration as well as a celebration of those things which are common to all human beings in spite of their origin.

Benjamin currently lives in Brooklyn, NY where he performs every week with outstanding young and experienced Songwriters and Jazz musicians of the city.is  He involved passionately in both his own project, as well as collaborating in many others'. He has collaborated internationally with projects such as "Ella Baila Sola" (Spain), Tsidii Le Loka (South Africa, Broadway Lion King), Paz Court (Chile), Yousif Yaseen's "Visions" (Kuwait), "La Orquesta del Viento" (Chile), Jacinta Clusellas (Argentina), Franz Mesko (Chile) and many others.

Nando Michelin (professor at Berklee, close collaborator with Esperanza Spalding) said he believes Benjamin "can get to be an important voice of the Southamerican popular music, and an ambassador of the Southamerican song here in USA". Roberto Barahona (curator of the biggest Jazz festival in Chile, Festival de Jazz Providencia) said that Benjamin is "one of the most promising Jazz and World Music musicians from Chile". Fernando Huergo (Berklee professor and renowned bassist from Argentina) said Benjamin "has huge passion and dedication for music, specially South American. The musical material he has produced, both in his project as well as others' is of a high standard".
