"Just Left of Common Fence"

Ani Difranco says, "Every tool is a weapon if you hold it right," and Brent Bain is no stranger to wielding his guitar like an ax. Cutting into the undemocratic state of society (welcome to Alberta) Just Left of Common Fence offers up a compelling, insightful, socio-political and energetic set of songs composed here in Calgary and around the globe. This is the relief that you seek. - Eric Moschopedis

"Music Centre Canada"

Brent Bain is one of the best singer/songwriters I have heard in a long time.
He has a terrific voice and is also an accomplished guitarist. His original compositions are both fresh sounding and accessible: The melodies are catchy and the lyrics relevant.
His material stands up equally well, performed solo or embellished by other musicians.

On stage he performs with passion and intensity while at the same time winning audiences over with his friendly down to earth demeanor. His between song banter, both interactive and anecdotal, adds a personal touch to the show: He makes you feel like a guest in his living room, even when it’s the first time you have seen him on stage.

Bio

Armed with over worked guitars, driving percussion and other implements of construction, Bent Brain has rolled his diverse collection of songs and stories into Southern Ontario. Bringing the streets of the world to the stages of the Toronto area. The un-bound energy of Bent Brain’s delivery is complimented by his ability to articulate obviously ignored truths, based on a wealth of experience and cognition.

Brent (Bent Brain) stumbled in to the profession of busking in a way that was not dissimilar to stubbing your toe. And it was just what the doctor ordered. Over the next five years Brent developed his approach to street performance, and made a modestly successful living while funding his travel around the world, contributing to the evolution of his socio-political combination of folk, rock, jazz, gospel and country music.

There is one essential ingredient to busking successfully, and it happens to be the same for the stage; ‘Project oneself, and ones art in a way that captivates and intrigues an audience’, and that’s just what Brent has been able to do. During his world travel Brent played local music venues, coffee shops, a wedding in the Swiss Alps, a 50th birthday party for a German artist, and of course busking. Brent established roots in Australia and Switzerland. It was during this time that he collaborated with German Percussionist Christopher Voss. They were recognized across Australia and Europe as The Busking Essentials.

Brent has had many guests for his recordings and live performances, as well as a number of band arrangements including Bainsbridge, a 9-piece band in 1996. Bringing some of Toronto’s finest performers to share the stage and street continues this tradition.

Brent continues to perform in the streets and at various venues in the Toronto area. He is currently studying a program in entertainment management at Trebas Institute, in addition to an intense program with legendary guitarist Lloyd Garber.
