"POP: NEW RELEASES - Globe and Mail"

Pay no mind to the jaded, for there are things new under the sun. Bernice, who is the quicksilver singer-songwriter Robin Dann and her interesting musical company, is novel and reaf?rming. Bernice makes ?uid, full, ambient and precise sounds, with percussion that is sometimes clanky. No grudges are shown toward harps, synthesizers, violas or even ?ugelhorns. Her voice is something like a bath – a lighter Meshell Ndegeocello. I haven't a clue what universe Dann came
from (Toronto?), but she's welcome from wherever.

"Best Songs of 2012 - Said the Gramophone"

61. Bernice - "Rêve Général"
Breaking, dissonant indie r&b. Pianos were still falling from the sky. Each one began as a distant black dot, almost imperceptible in the cloudcover. Then slowly it would get larger, and larger, all telltale shape. And the birds would get out of its way. - Said the Gramophone

'what was that', debut album. (sept/2011)

Bernice was born in 2010 on a tropical summer afternoon at queen and broadview. Robin Dann and Thom Gill (t h o m a s, Owen Pallett) sat down in their underwear and began recording a few of her songs. Three years later, Bernice has been through a lot but she’s still kicking around, often joined by guitarist Colin Fisher (notthewindnottheflag, Caribou), drummer Nico Dann (tUnE-yArDs) and bassist Dan Fortin (Myriad3, Stop Time, Serena Ryder).

Bernice’s debut album what was that was released in September of 2011 to critical acclaim from the Globe and Mail, NOW magazine, and UK music blog CMU among many others. After trips to France, a mini european christmas tour in 2011, a year at grad school in London (UK) and a trip home to close the Music Gallery’s 2012 season alongside David Arcus and Mango Peeler’s lights and colour trickery, Bernice will be settling in Toronto for a while. yes!

Call it what you like: indie r&b experimental croon lullabye, Bernice is aiming for something fresher, something more colourful and more soulful than ever before.
