Berri Txarrak may have started out in the Basque Country, but that hasn't stopped the group from seeing the rest of the world. Since the band's inception in 1994, Berri Txarrak have brought their riff-driven, grunge-influenced sound to the likes of Europe, Taiwan and Mexico. Yet the group also claims ties to the US, evident in super-producer Steve Albini's work on Txarrak's sixth album, 2009's 'Payola' [Roadrunner]. Though English is not the band's first language, frontman Gorka Urbizu took time recently to shed some light on the group before its SXSW appearance this March. - Spinner.com

An epic of emotions. Not the winner’s epic, not the
loser’s – not the hero’s nor the villain’s. An epic of
emotions. That which makes us di erent from what
we were yesterday. Because a musician is never the same
after the creative process. Something has moved inside,
something has made him shed his skin.
That’s Haria (“The Thread”), a little jewel born of the
collaboration between Berri Txarrak and renowned
producer Ross Robinson. A dozen new, good songs
from a band that after a 17-year career still manages to
leave room for surprises. The unrestrained emotion leaves
a listener short of breath. The values that made Berri
Txarrak special still apply, but they’ve added new colours
to their personal palette, showing us a future that could
take them in various new directions.
Defi ning Haria would be an oversimpli cation of the
album and its individual songs. It’s not easy to
fathom what these sound layers are made of. It’s
rock in the broadest sense of the word. Attitude. Pop
melodies riding on a sonic storm in a dirty sea. Fragility,
instinct, communication... Berri Txarrak are tugging at the
tangle of life by these 12 threads. May they never break.
