"Our Critics' Picks July 17, 2008"

The Beta Macks honor their obsolete namesake with a sound hailing from another era. Channeling the dark, gothic strain of new wave, synth fills drown singer/keyboardist Bill McGuire’s [sic] narcotized croon, while distorted guitar echoes through the background.

Bio

Originally comprised of Bill Mitchell (vocals), Nick Bennett (guitar), and Blake Taylor (drums), the Beta Macks had already been performing and recording together in various incarnations for 10 years when they formed in early 2007. And supporting Lord T & Eloise at the Basement as their first gig was the acidtest equivalent to being thrown into the deep end to learn to swim. But they've been thrashing about successfully afloat ever since. At times graceful and serene, at others, chaotic and desperate.

Lindsay Johns (keys) was an instant recruit after sitting in on early "Annabelle" sessions shortly thereafter and soon enough the group grew to include a DJ and guest MCs before settling instead upon the veteran musicalities of Matt Fuller (bass) and Marshall Bravestar (keys) in the fall of 2007.

The Beta Macks have been gigging and recording in Nashville since, opening for bands such as Be Your Own Pet, Cage the Elephant & the Protomen while headlining many shows themselves.

2008 sees the Beta Macks on the eve of completing their first full-length studio record with eyes poised on branching out beyond Nashville and ears perked to a brand new sound.
