Bio

NME - “Glam folk genius, a Legend in the making...”

Beginning her career as a solo artist at age 16, Beth Jeans Houghton gained a reputation as a young folk artist creating harmonies with her own vocals by way of a loop pedal and a guitar.

A limited edition EP released on Finders/Keepers was followed by single ‘Golden/NightSwimmer’ on Static Caravan which was produced by Adem (of Fridge and Silver Columns). Both releases were well received by a press hailing Beth as the next big thing in British folk, and Beth began to work with Rob Challice of CODA Agency in the UK and Tom Windish from Windish Agency in the US.

Although Houghton appreciates the experience gained from this time in her life she became increasingly aware that her sound was not portraying that which was in her head. She heard orchestras, male choirs, beats, bass and lead guitar. It was time for her music to become the beast she envisioned....

Beth enlisted the skills of four integral musicians - Dav Shiel (drums, keys, sampler) Rory Gibson (Bass) Ed Blazey (Lead Guitar, Trumpet) and Findlay MacAskill (violin), all of whom can sing like warriors.

The group, now named Beth Jeans Houghton and The Hooves of Destiny went on to record the ‘Hot Toast Vol. 1’ EP, released through Static Caravan. Between tours of the UK and Europe (including headline tours and in support of Stornoway), the band began work on debut album ‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose’, produced by Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, U2 and Elbow).

LIVE

The band have played a huge amount of festivals (including Glastonbury park stage, Main stage at Bestival, Main stage at End of the road, Main stage at Summer Sundae etc) and conferences (In the City, The Great Escape, Music Middlesbrough live and Liverpool In the City). In 2007 Devendra Banhart invited Houghton to play solo during his set on the main stage at Green Man Festival to 10,000 people.

Since the bands birth they have supported many established artists from both the UK and the US including:

Bon Iver
Mumford & Sons
Mystery Jets
Tinariwen
Cornershop
Joan as police woman
Vetiver
Tunng
Imogen Heap

In recent months Beth and the Hooves have had substantial US radio play with support from Jason Kramer at KCRW and in the December 2011 issue of Mojo, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers was quoted as saying that Beth Jeans Houghton “is a genius.”

The album, which was funded by Houghton’s publishing company Warner/Chapel, was written, recorded and produced without the help (or unwanted creative influence) of a record label. In January 2011, after completion of the record, Houghton signed to the well established independent label Mute.

At this time Beth took a life changing trip to Los Angeles. She fell in love with the city and its people, took road trips (a journey from LA to Texas features in the video for ‘Dodecahedron’) and realised that this was where she wanted to be.

In May 2011 the band released the first single from the album ‘Dodecahedron’ to rave reviews, proving Beth’s ‘comeback’ to be one of the most anticipated of recent years. The track was playlisted on BBC Radio 1 - the biggest Radio station for popular music in the UK. ‘Dodecahedron’s video was chosen to be released via an exclusive with Urban Outfitters and regular plays and sessions on 6Music followed before the band released follow up single ‘Lilliput’.

Liliputt has been named ‘Single of the week’ on many music blogs and websites including Drowned in Sound, The 405, and KYEO, and was chosen as one of the top 5 singles to listen to in NME magazine upon its release. It has also had substantial radio play on both BBC Radio 1 and 6Music.

The Album “Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose” will be released through Mute in both the UK and the US.

The band have a strong US team in place (Windish Agency, Mute US, Warner/Chappell) to support efforts in the States, and SXSW is an ideal opportunity to showcase the upcoming album, attract press and radio coverage and build on what is already a strong start to Beth’s career across the world.
