Slick. Fresh. Exciting. BF Soul is that and much more.
This 12-piece R&B/Soul band will get you up out of your seat and dancing. With three soulful female vocalists, a tight 5-piece horn section, and a rhythm section that grooves, this band knows how to get down. BF Soul is authentically reviving that old Soul sound.
Their dynamic image lends itself perfectly as an homage to greats such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Etta James, and Bobby “Blue” Bland, as BF Soul weaves seamless covers with a funky flair. BF Soul also performs original songs written by different members of the group. To someone not intimately familiar with the soul repertoire of the 50s, 60s and 70s, these new songs could indeed be classics. Recently, CBC Radio 1 aired their original songs, “He’s My Man” on Metro Morning and “Wishing Tree” on Here And Now.
“People, especially people our age, just weren’t playing music like this. We wanted to expose everyone to this stuff,” says bandleader and guitarist Fraser Melvin. And exposure they have achieved. Well-known in the Toronto music scene with performances at such venues as the Orbit Room, Wrong Bar, The El Mocambo, Rancho Relaxo, and Mitzi’s Sister, BF Soul is known for their energetic live shows that consistently pack the dance floor. Whether it’s a slow blues (St. James Infirmary) or a rockin’ tribute to Jimi Hendrix (Stone Free), you can count on the groove being heavy, the horns being tight, and the vocals being soulful.
In August, 2011 they performed at the Kitchener Blues Festival, opening for blues guitarist Johnny Winter, as well as performing at the Lakeshore Mardi Gras Festival, opening for Canadian Rock band Chilliwack. In 2010, BF Soul had the honor of being nominated and performing in the Toronto Blues Society’s Talent Search at Nathan Phillips Square. This outstanding band has been compared to contemporary artists such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings as well as classic artists like Sly & The Family Stone.
With a sound so profound it will move you out your seat, BF Soul is the hot, new Soul band around. So you better watch out, cause trouble's in town.
