"October: Big Dreams"

When listening to Montreal rap crew Big Dreams’s debut album Stars, you can’t help but feel yourself slipping into a delightful state of dreamy bliss. It seems unsettling that music can produce such an effect, but just give the record a spin (or five), and you’ll see what I mean. A music-coma at its finest, Stars is undeniably soulful. Every beat on the record is smooth yet calculated as every rhyme is catchy yet humble. It’s hard to believe that the self-proclaimed band of brothers produced the record from producer and frontman Myles Guénin’s own bedroom/makeshift recording studio in Montreal’s West Island.

Big Dreams consists of four very talented rappers and producers—Myles Guénin, Timeliss, TasK The RaDD, and Rowz. Playing as many live shows as they can, creating more and more hard-hitting tracks, and even launching a weekly YouTube vlog of their musical journey, the BDT crew is tenaciously fighting its way to the top of the hip-hop totem pole and is certainly not stopping until they reach their dream. Here is their incredible story.

How did the group form?

The birth of the team started in 2009 after Myles’ triumphant recovery from a severe illness. He had a grey notebook he always wrote lyrics in everyday and guarded it as his personal treasure. Not long after, Myles decided to open his life up to his city through his music and began recording and releasing songs from the studio in his room. With a higher consciousness of musical awareness, Myles’ horizons since expanded largely and greatly. After his first duo project with Timeliss, the second incoming member of BDT, in 2011, Myles began producing beats and singing as well. BDT’s first project was done in conjunction with Timeliss who went to high school with Myles. For Timeliss, music always played the most significant role in his life and his passion drove his ambition to create music that is filled with powerful punch lines and compassionate lyrics.Constantly thinking outside the box, Timeliss is always looking for new ways to reach new audiences and prides himself on his diversity as an artist. His lyrics express his lessons learned and serve as a way to deal with the hardships that accompany living life. From there, the BDT Team grew as childhood and high school friend TasKthe RaDD would soon join as the third artist of the team in 2011. TasK’s extreme love for the power and messages of hip-hop surfaced, and he diversified the crew’s energy throwing in his old school hip-hop vibe and new school lyricism. TasK is an artist that continually pushes to break down barriers and musical limits. His music often reflects his ideas on society, achieving success and internal happiness. Rowz completed the group in 2011 as the last member to join the team. Bringing his powerful messages inspired by everyday life experiences as a young man, Rowz brings contrast by rapping about the ups and downs of life. Rowz uses music as the best way to express himself and aims to be relatable to his fan base. Rowz, like the other members, was heavily encouraged and inspired to write by his team. His funny and positive energy lives at the core of the brotherhood.

What is the inspiration behind your music?

Honestly, life — the ups and downs, the good times and the bad. That is what we hope to express the most with our words.

Who inspired you guys to pursue music?

Myles - Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West & Drake. They all motivated me at different stages of my life, and I want to sort of give that same feeling to someone else.

Timeliss – Jay- Z is the true definition of a successful music artist, entrepreneur and of course my brother Myles. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be making music.

TasK The RaDD - It all started when I would be surrounded by music makers and dream chasers. These guys were also my best friends. Witnessing them get better and better made me wanna try a hand at making music myself considering I was already a fan. Mixed with the passion for it and determination of fulfilling my dreams, I found the courage to try it and am now here doing what I do best. Thank you Myles and Timeliss.

Rowz - Definitely Myles Guénin, he believed in me and he’s an inspiring guy.

How did the name “Big Dreams Team” come about?

The meaning behind the name is simple —us young kids with the same vision and goals. More importantly, we’re a movement that want to inspire big dreams, hence the name.

Montreal has a great music scene. Do you believe that this city has influenced you in any way? If so, how?

The West Island in Montreal has had influence on us for sure. It’s where we’re from and where the music is made. We’re always here, and we don’t stop.

Walk me through the process of creating your album Stars.

It started with one song. Myles had a whole bunch of beats, and we selected the ones that created this unique sound we’ve discovered. How the name came about…a dream, plus the mindset of wanting to be stars— not necessarily celebrities but dream chasers/achievers.

What was your favorite song from the record and why?

Myles- The whole project. I produced the whole thing and I watched it come to life…it’s like all the tracks are my children or something.

Timeliss – “You Tell Me” is my favorite. The production of the song is great. The whole story behind it when it’s understood really hits people emotionally. It’s been witnessed.

TasK The RaDD- Definitely, “Home.” It’s shows how much we’ve grown as a group, to the point where it’s not about us anymore. It’s about where we’re from.

Rowz – I would say “Home” also. It was the last beat Myles made and the last beat we recorded at the studio. Nothing was planned, and it sank in perfectly. It’s a great song for our city, and it’s an anthem-like song for the West Island.

Pick 5 songs that you are listening to right now that you believe have influenced you in your music?

1) “So Long” by Rocky Fresh,

2) “Houstalantavegas” by Drake

3) “Heart of the City” by Jay-Z

4) “Bad News” by Kanye West

5) “The Coolest” by Lupe Fiasco

What is the best show you have ever played? Worst?

Our best show was our first headline show in Montreal on September 1st. People knew BDT at that point, and they were chanting our names and singing our lyrics. It was an overwhelming experience. But our worst show was for this annual event called Adrenaline at a theme park. We were on the bill to perform, and they told us that we has early sound check which never happened. By the end of the night, we never performed. We pretty much wasted our whole day for nothing.

What advice do you have for other musicians that are trying to get into the music business?

At the end of the day, just don’t give up on what you believe in. Pursue those big dreams.

Bio

With the biggest growing fan base of Hip-Hop and Rap enthusiasts in Montreal supporting the crew, it is no surprise The Big Dreams Team is on a fast-paced rise to stardom. The young artists together share the same passion to take the world by storm with their music. BDT started a Hip-Hop/Rap movement for Montreal in a never been done before direction that spread epidemically, gaining support from each end of the city and a widespread of ages. In a city of little opportunity for rap artists, the group as a whole are leaders for their city to strive for more opportunities, unison and of course, bigger dreams. The four artists collectively form a group of young men whose sound is like no other, original and creative; their sound grasps a concept of musical ability and lyrical content that has only been seen by rap industry veterans.

The birth of the team started in 2009 after Myles, 19, one of BDT’s first members’ triumphant recovery from a severe illness. He recalls having a grey notebook he always wrote lyrics in everyday and guarded it as his personal treasure. Not long after, Myles decided to open his life up to his city through his music and began recording and releasing songs from the studio in his room. With a higher consciousness of musical awareness, Myles’ horizons since expanded largely and greatly. After his first duo project with the second BDT member, in 2011 Myles began producing beats and extending his vocal talents to singing as well. He is known for his creative storytelling skills, melodic vocals, his artistic flow and vivacious energy. BDT’s first project was done in conjunction with Timeliss, 20, who went to High School with Myles and is at the foundation of the empire. For Timeliss, music always played the most significant role in his life and his passion drove his ambition to create music that is filled with powerful punch lines and compassionate lyrics. Timeliss is inspired by everyday struggles, life, and love experiences. Constantly thinking outside the box, Timeliss is always looking for new ways to reach new audiences and prides himself on his diversity as an artist. His lyrics express his lessons learned and serve as a way to deal with the hardships that accompany living life. He is known for his intimate and aspirational lyrics. From there the empire would grow as childhood and High School friend Task the RaDD, 19, would soon join as the third artist of the team in 2011. Always being a part of the journey, Task’s extreme love for the power and messages of Hip-Hop surfaced and he diversified the crew’s energy throwing in his old school hip-hop vibe and new school lyricism. Inspired by the deeper meaning of life and known for his impeccable flow, over-your-head references and his passion, Task is an artist that continually pushes to break down barriers and musical limits. His music often reflects his ideas on society, achieving success and internal happiness. Rowz, 19, completed the group in 2011 as the last member to join the team. Bringing his powerful messages inspired by everyday life experiences as a young man whether it’s family problems, girl problems or just problems in general, Rowz brings contrast by rapping about the ups and downs of life. Rowz uses music as the best way to express himself and aims to be relatable to his fan base. Rowz, like the other members, was heavily encouraged and inspired to write by his team. His funny and positive energy lives at the core of the brotherhood.

Their first official solo project as a team, following significant personal and artistic changes named “Stars”, was released May 26th and has since reached local and international lengths. After many small and big venue performances, big crowds and small crowds; “Stars” is BDT’s first official step to the next level and the time will soon come where the biggest dream will be achieved, worldwide recognition about who they are and where they’re from.
