"Best Bets - Skank"

The are three waves of ska music, musicologists agree. We proposed that there are three waves of Central Jersey ska. Presently, Central Jersey Third Wave bands include Streetlight Manifesto and Catch 22. The Second Wave is represented by the Hub City Stompers. The First Wave? That's New Brunswick's Bigger Thomas, who turned on a generation of Central Jersey ska kids starting in the late 1980s. There will be a CD-release party for Bigger Thomas' brand new CD, "We Wear The Mask," from the New York City-based Megalith Records. The horns are cool, the riffs are ringing and the groove comes to New Brunswick direct from Jamaica with a stop off at Coventry. This is the real stuff. Bigger Thomas with Hub City Stompers, 10 tonight, Court Tavern, 124 Church St., New Brunswick. $7. (732) 545-7265 or

"Reggae rules Wednesdays at Bar A"

They're jammin'. And maybe you like jammin', too.

Well, if you do, the Jersey Shore Island Beat Showcase rocks out every Wednesday with original local bands and DJs at Bar Anticipation, 703 16th Ave., Lake Como.

Starting around 9:30 p.m., various bands perform reggae, rock, dancehall, soca, world, Latin and hip-hop music.

On June 8, the performers were Bigger Thomas, Echo Movement, Kiwi the Child and DJ OE.

Created by brothers Stephen and David Fowler of Wall, the Island Beat Showcase started June 1 and will continue throughout the summer.

"We came to realize after last summer that there is no real harbor for reggae acts at the Jersey Shore," said David. "We decided to create JSIB in hopes of uniting all local reggae acts."

"It's all about entertainment and Shore culture," added brother Stephen. "People along the coast relate to it. We have great expectations for the summer, and we feel like it's going to catch on and be a big night."

Bigger Thomas singer Roger Apollon Jr. of West Orange enjoys the type of audience that attends reggae performances.

"The crowd that comes to these shows is diverse and people are often very into the music," he said. "They go out of their way to attend shows and be part of the scene."
