Big Round Spectacles is a soulful, indie, piano-pop duo based out of Denton, TX. BRS has a warm, "homemade" feel to it, largely due to the fact that most of their songs were indeed written and recorded in a living room. Actually, many of the tunes in the Spectacles Discography were recorded in an empty worship center or choir practice room at First Baptist Church of Lewisville, where Matt Terrill, the project's principle member, was once a janitor. Such a large percentage of the rooms in the church had upright pianos in them: Matt felt that he had no choice but to learn how to play the instrument. To his surprise, it came pretty easily to him, and the songs subsequently came pouring out.

Upon hearing BRS for the first time, many describe it as whimsical and quirky. Fun songs. However, it is not uncommon for the thoughtful listener see through a layer of unusal humor to something a bit more substantial. For example, some laugh at the ignorant kid in "Antarctica" with a skewed vision of the world around him, while some understand that the song is about more than polar distortion. The ideal Big Round Spectacles listener is the type of person who likes to read a poem once through for enjoyment's sake before beginning to consider it from different angles, not the guy who just wants to get "the point."

The most recent offering from BRS is an album called "Random People." With unnamed speakers providing interludes between almost every track, it lives up to its name. Yet these random people offer incredible insights into the themes of their surrounding songs. It's a prime example of the type of thing that will intrigue the ideal listener to dive deeper with each subsequent listen… while possibly annoying everyone else.

BRS plays regularly in and around the beautiful streets of Denton with some ridiculously talented artists. If you're in the mood to for some soulful, indie, piano-pop or just want your thoughts provoked, check it out next time you get a chance.
