First up tonight was a delightful country-pop band from Copenhagen called Billie Van and Her Ranchhands. Their sound had blues and rock influences throughout and I was really taken with lead singer Billie Van's vocals. 'Heartbreaking Nightdance' is a perfect introduction to this band and certainly went down a storm this evening; the bluesy country riffs on this track were so addictive and it was a great way to energise the crowd and set their stall for what was to come. The lead vocals were clearly the stand out aspect of this band for me; I was enthralled for the full twenty minute set, which also included 'Fire In Your Balls' and 'My Love and I'. Bio
Billie Van (born Merete Pascual 8/11-83) is a Danish singer-songwriter who currently resides in Liverpool. With band members both in Norway, Denmark and UK she forms different bands all covering the country pop style, with roots in both blues and rock.
The music is based on mordant, humorous stories and sassy, desirous slide guitars. Billie gets referenced to Jenny Lewis, Dolly Parton, Billie Holiday Jack White and Robert Johnson, both modern and old classic artists. She steadily made her own vocal style, drawing from the sly country twang of Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton while remaining indebted to her love of pop music.
In March 2009 they recorded an EP in Liverpool in the George Martin Studio at Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts, where Billie currently study and takes her third year on a BA Music degree.
Billie Van is currently working on her next EP, which will be recorded in Liverpool in January´11.
