"Band Interview - The Bill Littlefrod Trio"

In this week's band interview we'll be talking with Bill Littleford of the Bill Littleford Trio. The Bill Littleford Trio specializes in jazz from the '40's, '50's, and '60's. Bill is also an accomplished musician and teacher.

Follow up:

Hi, Bill. So tell us about your band. Obviously there are three members because it's called the "Bill Littleford Trio", but what instrument does each member play?

[Bill Littleford] Well, I'm the guitar player. Josh Moore plays the bass and Dave Mackey plays the drums. Sometimes those two guys can't make a gig because of another commitment or gig so I call a few other guys I know who can sub. I've always liked the trio sound. The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream were trios. Of course there are many famous jazz trios. Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery, Cal Collins, Barney Kessell, and Joe Pass are just a few great jazz guitar players who worked in this format sometime during their careers. It's the format I feel most comfortable in. It doesn't get too crowded on stage. - The Axe Masters

Bio

The Bill Littleford Trio is a modern jazz group from the Cincinnati region. They perform their own compositions as well as classic jazz covers. They can cross genres and eras, playing swing while embracing rock and fusion.
Formed by guitarist Bill Littleford and drummer Dave Mackey in 2007, the Trio originally performed classic jazz covers from the 1930s to the 1960s. With the addition of Josh Moore on bass in 2008, the group found its own sound. The Trio embraces the 'New Orleans' groove while drawing from a variety of influences. Bill's americana guitar playing is supported by Dave's 'Elvin Jones' style drumming and Josh Moore's spacial melodic bass lines. It is not unusual to hear the influence of Jimi Hendrix, Thelonius Monk, Bill Frissell, Miles Davis, and Wes Montgomery simultaneously in one song.
A monthly gig at Riverbank Cafe in Hamilton, OH and a weekly gig at Apsara in Blue Ash, OH enabled the Trio to get tighter and begin experimenting with their originals. In addition to being a 'working' band, the group has performed at the Oxford Art and Wine Festivals of 2008 and 2009. They've also assisted many charities; performing at Music For A Cure in Oxford, OH, Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon, and Play It Forward at the famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club. The Trio has also been booked at many private function such as weddings, rehearsal dinners, holiday parties, and country club dates. They've even been a 'for hire' rhythm section for singers and big bands.
In early 2011, the Trio released their first full length album. It contains seven songs of original jazz and is getting considerable airplay on local station WAIF 88.3 FM. With the excitement of the new LP, the band is booking plenty of summer dates such as the 2011 Oxford Art and Wine Festival. 2011 looks to be another landmark year for the Trio.
