Bio
The compositions of the very gifted guitarist/leader Billy Newman, informed by his longstanding passion for Brazil and Brazilian music and his deep roots in modern jazz, present a unique mix of influences ranging from the swinging, cerebral tunes of Queens-born Lennie Tristano to the kaleidoscopic inventions of Bangu-bred Hermeto Pascoal. Out of the meeting of the two very different urban cultures of Rio de Janeiro and Brooklyn, NY, an exciting and dynamic dialogue is born. A whole panorama of North and South American rhythms and musical forms are used to express the pulse of the city and complex shadings of joy and sadness through a constant blending of major and minor colors. Samba, bebop, chorinho and more, all find their place and balance in a rich and contrasted musical repertoire that combines structure and arrangement with free-flowing jazz improvisation.
The band has also explored diverse covers from both Brazil and Jazz world and can give workshops
and serve to explore relationship between the different cultures. Music that can describe, inform and become "the Theatre of Everyday life"
