"Billy Smith @ Whelans"

The first thing you'll notice about Billy Smith is his appearance. He is uncannily tall and thin, with tired eyes and pale skin. He is remarkably well turned out tongiht, though his sad expression and irreconcilably tangled hair seem to dissolve any heirs of grace or sense of style. He begins without a whisper, and the audience seem to respect this intense silence throughout the show. The music is slow, mournful and heartfelt. Surprisingly then, it is never clichéd or dull. These songs are not about feeling sorry for oneself, neither are they directed at some sort of naive hope or youthful optimism. Rather, they seem to possess a resignation to heartbreak, to sorrow - to loneliness. It is in this acceptance that their is genuine hope, even if it is only the knowledge that one will (or indeed must) cope. This is exactly what the typical overtly emotive singer-songwriter scene is missing. The fact that this understated wisdom is cautiously delivered by an 18 year old makes it all the more enticing. 8/10 - Hotpress

Bio

Billy Smith was born in 1989. He grew up in the countryside. His father played folk guitar, and introduced him to the likes of Leonard Cohen and Janis Ian at an early age. Then he heard Dylan and 60's groups such as the Stones and the Velvets. Then he wrote some noisy songs. Then he started writing sad songs, and hasn't stopped since.
