Relentlessly inventive and yet constantly nodding to various forms of the past, a proper genre analysis for Lafayette, Louisiana’s Bird City is a fairly elusive thing. A shiny antique purged from the AM depths of coffee stained psychological thrillers and an unapologetic faithfulness to formless psychedelic formalities, these boys may not be homegrown ritualistic but they are, if nothing else, doyens for an organic future. If the 60s & 70s had taken place in a parallel dimension, or perhaps if the early 80s had started in the late 50s, we would have seen something like this sooner. We haven’t. Sub-bass drenched chamber groves, thrill -a-second synth-punk wave-core, surf radio ghost town washouts, you will find it here, in Bird City.
