Bird Dog

Bird Dog

BandAlternativePop

We were once described in an interview as sounding like "A morning after intense dance punk with a taste of indie-pop in your mouth. In short, a beat that's sure to make your bed move." Also, "Vocals like Spoon, guitars like the strokes, and a sound that is completely and utterly unique."

Biography

Bird Dog has been described to be like, "A morning after intense dance punk with a taste of indie-pop in your mouth. In short, a beat that's sure to make your bed move." Well... we're pretty happy with that description.

Formed on Earth in late 2005, the indie/alternative band Bird Dog started out as a small garage rock band in small-town Frankenmuth, MI. Bird Dog is made up of high school friends and classmates Alex O'Dell (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), John Hurlahe (lead guitar, backup vocals), Mike Carman (Bass... not the fish), John Coyle (drums), and Jordan Putnam (synthesizer, piano, Rhodes, melodica... and other random instruments).
If one was to witness Bird Dog's practicing in their home town of Frankenmuth, MI (not that you've ever heard of it), one might expect to be exposed to full frontal nudity, high pitched synth riffs played at volumes never before reached, vulgarity that would make small animals and children cry, and Mike (our bass player). Aside from all of this though, the music of Bird Dog is anything but unpleasant. Bird Dog's benevolency towards our killer fans always shows, no matter what the level of kindness we show ourselves.

In all seriousness though…

Bird Dog has played shows all over Michigan and is branching out at breakneck speed. We produce music influenced by a myriad of genres including indie/rock, dance, punk, pop, and jazz. Some examples of artists that have played a major role in influencing our music are Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Bloc Party, The Clash, The Beatles, and many more. While not conforming to any specific genre, Bird Dog maintains a uniqueness unmatched by, what we believe to be, any other emerging group.

We currently have two full length CD's. The first is called Disco Thunder. Disco Thunder is the manifestation of the vast myriad of inspirations that we all experienced through our first two years as a band. Our first CD was one of those projects that seemed to be more of a collection for posterity at first, but turned into something far greater. As far as the CD "Disco Thunder" is concerned, here is what others have had to say about it:

- "While that may be hard to believe, Bird Dog is unlike any one band I have ever heard before. This is shown through their debut record entitled "Disco Thunder." With everything from hard dance beats to driving rock leads, pop hooks to explosive lyrics, and vocal harmonies to Martian invasions (seriously), Disco Thunder shows a true depth of raw talent and inimitability."

- Bird Dog’s debut album Disco Thunder is both musically raw and complex. The hard-driving drums, screaming guitars, and raspy vocals remind the listeners of The Clash or Nirvana, but with the complex synthesizers and harmonies laced over the top. Hidden behind the catchy music, however, is a poetic repertoire that could only be crafted by those coming of age post 9/11… Given the opportunity, these songs should stand the test of time. There is enough seriousness and playfulness to please any listener. What boggles the mind is that the composers of these musically complex and insightful songs are kids who are currently roaming the halls of their high schools and colleges. Enjoy!”

Our second album is entitled "You Are Only As Tall As The Grass Grows"

This new album, released in november of 2008, is our current pride and joy. After one full year of gathering money through shows, merchandise, and donations, we spent all of our money recording at an upper end studio in Chicago called Rax Trax. Additionally, in order to help rapidly expand our fan base, we decided to make the album available for free download on our website, www.birddogtheband.com.

In the first few months after release we have had more support than we could have asked for with downloads, street team support, and general support of our musical endeavors.

We hope that you like our stuff. It’s been one heck of a ride so far, and we hope to take our band and our music as far as we can to spread our messages and energy to people all over.

With <3,
Bird Dog

Tokyo Sunshine / Nagasaki Nightmare

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

Lights in the city they shine so bright
Casting my shadow
These lamp posts won’t lead you to where you wanna go
Your gravity in relation to the moon
Ain’t so important
As the way that you’re drifting on through the universe

Black out, black out
Here comes your iron wave
Stand up, stand up
Face it with your arms raised
This is your moment
I hope you shine like a diamond

Now close your eyes, and realize
That somewhere in Tokyo there is sunshine
Waiting for you to come
On back home
Nagasaki sidewalks on those cold winter mornings
I was standing there looking at you
You were looking at me

Black out, black out
Here comes your iron wave
Stand up, stand up
Face it with your arms raised
This is your moment
I hope you shine like a diamond

Freedom Fighters

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

You got the home
You got the life
You got the mid-size car and a kid and a wife
You got the medals
You got the call
Now you’re going to a foreign land to fight in a war

Cause we’re running, running, running fast
Running on a fast track
Going, going, nowhere fast (exclamation) (2X)

You got your face paint
You got your orders
You got your AK-47
Driving through the desert

You see the man
With the bomb
On his back
It goes BOOM BABY BOOM

Channel news
At 11
Local teen gets shot, down in Iraq
Its so tragic
Its so tragic
He’s coming home in a casket, home in a casket

Cause we’re running, running, running fast
Running on a fast track
Going, going, nowhere fast (exclamation) (2X)

Martians!

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

Martians!
They attack!
Your wife and kids!
So beware! (2X)

I see them come
I see them coming
I hear the screams the people
Running
Just give me a light, just give me a
Light

You better wipe that smile off your face
You better step back, and run back, without a trace
I see the lights, I hear the screams
You better start running
THEY’RE COMING FOR YOU
MATT MANNING
THEY’RE COMING FOR YOU

I see them come
I see them coming
I hear the screams the people
Running
Just give me a light, just give me a
Light

You gotta a plasma gun pressed against your forehead
1, 2, 3, Zap and you’re dead
Am I going insane
Or are there martians here? (2X)

Phil's Song

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

I’ve been running
I’ve been running
Since the day, that we met
And its been, the same old shit
I’ve been making
I’ve been making
The same mistakes
Again, and again

Cause the girls at the door now
They’re laughing at you but you don’t want to look
And you wanna die
It’s such a shame
And the rain’s coming down
Oh what an irony
And the moons laughing now
You better cut your losses

Well happy, happy new years
To you my friend

Well it’s the love and the hate and the feeling that you get when it all goes away
My hearts on fire

Well the girl in the blue jeans, comes walking in the door
I said oh my god girl, how you get looking that way?

You gotta kick em out

Cause I wanted to fly

Clandestine Radio

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

You can change the world
If you want to, if you want to
Its much bigger than you and me my friend
Its those pimps and those cops and those crooked politicians
We don’t need no guns, to get things moving
WE’LL get it moving

Clandestine Radio
We’ll get the message through
Clandestine Radio

He could have been
A doctor, a lawyer, maybe even a teacher
He never got to know his brother or his father
They stripped him of, his dignity and his innocence yeah
Cause they took him
And they shot him
In the head

Clandestine Radio
We’ll get the message though
Clandestine Radio

Guns for hire

Car Crash (Seat Belt)

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

Looking back only time will tell of
What was wrong, and what was right,
You gotta get out while you’re young
You gotta get out while you’re young

I said time is running
Time is running
The clock is ticking
The clock it ticking
My body’s moving
My body’s moving
Out through the front window

I said time is running
Time is running
The clock is ticking
The clock is ticking
The tides are rising
The tides are rising
They’ll take care of this
Yeah they’ll take care of this

And the world will stop spinning
And nothing will really matter
And I can’t save you now
Oh yeah this is the end my friend
And all our embitterments
Weren’t making us any better
The clouds will part the way

Car crash it came so fast
And the love you make won’t last
The metal and the glass and the pavement on the ground
The sirens will lead you out of town
Cause time is everything

Oh yeah you look around
Look at all your friends
They’re going to miss you so
Bad

You were hanging by a thread
The line went flat, and you were dead
Yeah you got out while you were young
Yeah you got out while you were young
The headlines came
The funeral set
The bells they rang
And the birds they wept
Yeah you got out while you were young
Yeah you got out while you were young

(Repeat)

The Streets

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

I’m the pimp
The cop
The crooked politician
I’m the hooker
The thief and the beggar on the street

Cause I’m Jesus Christ
On a cross
I’m the Devil in
Your sweetest dreams
I’m the man in the mask with the bomb in his hand
I’m the President of the U.S.S.A
I’m the kid in the factory
Making your shoes
I’m the girl on the billboard making the news
I’m the cancer that’s living in your skin
They say you can always lose
But you can never win

But don’t believe the lies
Just look a little deeper, and you will find the truth
There comes a breaking, there comes a breaking point
In every, in every
Era

I’m the pimp….

Well smoke, smoke
Its coming from a tower
We drop the bombs, bombs, bombs
In an act of desperation
Guns, guns, guns
Loaded and they’re cocked
We just got em pointed in the wrong direction

And don’t, believe the lies…..

Cause I was there in Tiananmen Square
And I was there on the grassy knoll
Cause I was there, but you just don’t care
Powers rise, and Powers fall

Cause tanks and bombs and nuclear weapons
They got me so damn scared
I said tanks and bombs and nuclear weapons
They got me so damn scared
Global warming and meteorites
They got me so damn scared
The price of blood for the price of oil
Yeah, its got me so damn scared
I said the future, yeah the future
Well its got me so damn scared

Burn Your Television

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

I need a new direction
I’m ga-ga-going a nowhere fast
Heres my social proclamation
I say we light this city up
Yeah we’ll smash the institution
For being so harsh and crass
We’ll subdue this nation
WITH THE SOUNDS OF ROCK AND ROLL

Whatcha think, whatcha think, watcha thinking?
Whatcha think, whatcha think, watcha thinking?
Something crazy I’m hoping
I’m thinking that we smash this party up

Repeat

I said hey my man, you want to fight it?
You want to fight it back?
Well first you gotta tear it up!
And tear it down.

I said hey my girl you want to fight it?
You want to fight it back
Well first you gotta tear it up!

Molotov Cocktail

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

GIVE IT TO ME JOHNNY
1,2,3, ALRIGHT

The artillery is roaring
To a drumbeat that’s pounding
A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY HEAD
And the ever driving nail, into the grain
It can leave an impression
IT’LL SCARE YOU AWAY
But if the balled fists of revolution
Come knocking at your door
Tell them you’re busy
So they don’t come back for more

SOS
It’s a state of emergency
SOS
It’s a dangerous society

I said oh the hysteria, oh the hysteria
MY GOD ITS TAKING OVER ME
I said oh the hysteria, oh the hysteria
MY GOD ITS TAKING OVER ME
When the stocks market crash
And we gotta a war in Iraq
I don’t know what to do
Do you?

Repeat

Polar Rat

Written By: Alex O'Dell, John Hurlahe, Mike Carman, John Coyle, Jordan Putnam

Well I said oh my god
Yeah I’m painting clouds on my bedroom sheets yeah
And she said
Keep it on the down low baby
Keep it on the down low
Well I said
When the mother wakes
And the sunshine breaks
Yeah it’s the same sad feeling yeah
Well I testify, I testify
Said the monkey to the sheep yeah come on now

Can you hold onto something real?
Can you touch and can you feel
Yeah the ghost inside yeah the ghost inside?
Come on lets wake it up, you and me
So wake from that sleep
Wake from that sleep
Alright!

We’re taking cover
Under magnolia trees yeah
The fires burning
But you can’t see thing
Just wanted to say
I’m not nervous
But I’m nervous
Cause I think that I may love you

Woah is that alright?
She said to me.
I’m not going to take it,
I’m gonna take it
Alright

Just shut the door
And turn of the lights
Shine the light, the light, the light
Just shut the door
Just shut it, just shut it,
AH, AH, AH, AH
Just shut it, just shut it.
Just shut the door.

Set List

Our typical set list really varies from venue to venue. We aim to both please our audience and deliver our stories. So, for example, a possible set list may include six or so songs from our album, a couple newer ones (that are in the process of being recorded) and even sometimes something like a song made up on the spot.

We do not really do cover songs. In the past we have played only one cover, a Bloc Party song called "Banquet." Though we often play covers in practice for fun, we really enjoy playing our own music at shows.
