Bio

Birds of Wales, is garnering the attention of fans on both sides of the Atlantic. Known for strong songwriting and outstanding live performances, they quickly became a buzz band of the Toronto music scene. Within seven months of playing their first show together in October 2005, Birds of Wales had already headlined shows to sell-out audiences, released a self-titled EP in Canada to positive reviews, and signed with The Agency Group.

"I've always had a thing for birds. I grew up with a cockatoo," recalls Morgan Ross, Birds of Wales' frontman and founder, who is of Welsh decent. During his summer break from university in 2005, he recorded a collection of songs, which would inevitably become the band’s freshman release, with his friends from EMI band Stabilo. Soon after, Morgan relocated from Vancouver to Toronto and formed the current incarnation of Birds of Wales with his bandmates, Mike Caputo (lead guitar), Morgan James Smith (bass) and Jesse Smith (drums).

A melding of Folk with Indie Rock, Birds of Wales’ sound has evoked comparisons to Coldplay, Ryan Adams, Wilco and Belle & Sebastian, to name a few. Birds of Wales' first EP has been enthusiastically received throughout Canada. Tracks from the disc have been broadcast regularly on Canadian college & commercial radio and across North America on XM and Sirius satellite radio. One track, “My Lady; In July,” was the most-played song on "The Verge,” XM’s new music station, in June 2006. “My Lady; In July” will also appear in “Ecstasy,” Rob Heydon’s upcoming film based on a story by “Trainspotting” author, Irvine Welsh.

Lured by attention they were receiving through the internet from European fans, Birds of Wales crossed the pond for their first UK tour in August 2006. Nine months later, with three successful tours under their belts, the band inked a deal to re-release their CD as the “Fall of the 49 EP” in the UK and Spain. Two additional tracks were added to this version including the single, “Cinderella (Has Nothing on You),” which was featured on a Valentines Day compilation CD, 560,000 copies of which were distributed throughout Ireland earlier this year. The music video for “Cinderella” also spent several weeks in rotation on MuchMoreMusic this past summer.

Last September, Birds of Wales finished off their summer touring with a spot at Toronto’s Virgin Festival. This fall the band continues to play dates in Canada while preparing for another tour of the UK and Europe in January. The band also plans to enter the studio this upcoming spring to record their first full length CD, and be sure to keep an eye out for Birds of Wales’ first tour dates in the United States soon after.
