"Bishop Wayne in projection"

The enlivened, multifaceted music guru and solo artist Bishop Wayne, from the Virgin Islands, brings a new dimension of musical artistry into R&B.

Combining alternative, rock, reggae, R&B and blues music, Bishop Wayne selectively refines his music to share his talent with those in larger picture. Backed up by his band members on drums, Oscar Watson II, bass, Roland Stephens, and guitar, Andrew Warren; Bishop performs for the enjoyment of others and translates complex beats, combining them into a dynamic uniform of altruistically composed rhythms described by Bishop as, “Alternative R&B”. Offering many with an exhilaration of sound that procreates a goodness in the hearts of those that listen and leaving them yearning for more. Listen closely to "Cool As" which will leave you cool as...

"BISHOP WAYNE DOES IT HIS WAY"

'I'm Just Me'

Bishop Wayne does it his way

By Mackenzie Pause

Not many artists know who they truly are. Bishop Wayne, however, seems to be on that path.

Spreading love and a positive message penetrates the core of his musical foundation, and the confidence that accompanies his message only strengthens these intentions.

Growing up in the Virgin Islands gave Wayne early exposure to various genres, and his family were no strangers to music.

"My father's side of the family is pretty much all musicians," Wayne said. "I used to go along with him to his gigs. Every once in a while he'd let me do something with the tambourine and eventually I started singing,"

His family planted the seeds that later would attribute to his growth as a songwriter. The loss of his uncle inspired a song to "Stopping the Violence" in the Virgin Islands. The song also reflects Wayne's intentions toward a positive message through music.

"At the time, there were a lot of songs that all they talked about was violence," Wayne said. "I felt like I needed to stand out a little bit. I feel like you need to say something positive. When it happened, and I wrote the song I didn't expect it to go as far as it did. I did a major interview on the top 40 station in the Virgin Islands, and it generated a lot of response."

More recently, response has generated around his latest release, "I'm Just Me," and his message still remains true.

"Be true to thyself, and love thyself," said Wayne, who is from Plant City and often plays in Winter Haven. "You treat people with the respect that you would want treated to you. Spreading the love. I talk a lot about love songs, but generally I just write what's in the heart. A lot of it is dreams or love that I would like to share. A lot is personal experience as well."

His experience has led him to a live band that created excitement in Wayne's voice just at the mention of their name.

"Love Piece Band has been wonderful for Bishop," Wayne said. "I'm learning so much from them. All the guys are phenomenal. They have a phenomenal singer, Raymond, that has this special personality when he gets on stage. I'm learning from that. It's more than singing, it's personal, and I love that. He captures you. You watch him perform and just want to say "Thank you.' The way he is on stage is the way he is off stage. So he's not really doing anything different except being himself.

While Wayne has performed solo, playing live with a band is an inimitable experience.

"It feels like we've known each other for a long time," Wayne said. "Sometimes we get there, and I know the song we're going to play. We get out there and start jamming out and all of these risks, turns or paths we might go down, the band is right there. We didn't rehearse any of that. It's just a chemistry that is there. It winds up being very natural. I love it.

"I'm Just Me" is Wayne's first full length release, and his optimistic, confident message seems to permeate Wayne's writing.

Wayne simply said, "Anything that is around you that is negative brings you down."

"I'm Just Me" can be purchased at Vinyl Fever and Sound Exchange, and online at Bishopw.net.

Music Review - of
Bishop Wayne

Bishop Wayne has a great soulful voice that’s backed with smooth beats and excellent guitar work. With harmonies and vocals flowing over the funky and flavorful music, he’s come a long way from his debut album while truly growing as a musician. Bishop’s debut CD, “I’m Just Me” was skillfully composed and produced and I really enjoyed listening to it from beginning to end as I’m sure other music lovers will.

The originality of Bishop Wayne’s music is praiseworthy and the fact that he has a live band with him at his shows is great. Being a musician myself, I can really appreciate the composition of the whole CD and how diverse each track is. Bishop has a few songs on “I’m Just Me” with touching lyrics about his family that many of us can relate to. I look forward to hearing more music from Bishop and will book him at my venue and numerous others in the future. His prospects are bright and I expect to see huge things forthcoming for Bishop Wayne. www.myspace.com/bishopw

BISHOP WAYNE a self-described "alternative rhythm-and- blues singer" originally from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Tampa's Bishop Wayne has established himself over the past year as one of the area's top soul singers, creating a buzz when he opened for Ryan Shaw at a well-attended WMNF gig in October. I'm Just Me
Bishop W.
Myspace.com/bishopw
Neo-soul singer Bishop W has the voice, phrasing, chops and passion to sell a sultry come-on or a down-on-bended-knee lover's lament. A student of polished, Marvin Gaye - indebted slow jams, Bishop W. displays plenty of talent but there is a sameness to his self-released full-length that is excerbated by the disc's dated-very 90s production. Align Bishop W. with a few song writing doctors plus an ace producer, and the Tampa native could easily find himself on BET.
