"Protest of Fred Phelps"

Band Comes Back to Protest Westboro Baptist Church
Brian Dorman

A Florida band called Bite Boy is back in town this weekend after their concert was such a big success last year.

The band drove here straight through from Orlando, Florida for this protest concert against Fred Phelps and his church, Westboro Baptist Church.

An interesting fact: the band members are not gay and many of the people at the concert aren't either. A mixed crowd of gays, bisexuals and straight people came back to accomplish what they started last year.

“I was really surprised to see all the support we got,” said lead singer, Rick Namey, referring to how many people showed up at last year's event, and all the national publicity the band received.

‘We played two songs and the police cut us off and we played our two songs, then we moved to a bigger venue. Most of the crowd moved with us and we picked up hundreds more when we got there.” Namey said.

No plans on moving this year. They set up here in a secluded area to get their message across without interruption from Phelps.

‘Nobody wants to be around him, no one wants to be with him, he is a bully so we feel like no one is going to stand up to him so we have to come out here and say something to him.”

‘They go to peoples funerals and tell the kids your daddy is going to hell and this kids dad just died,” Dorothy Hall, the drummer of the band said in disgust.

The Phelps’ have made it a gay issue, the shock here…

“I’m straight,” Hall said.

“I’m straight, hetero,” Thomas Lessman, the person hosting the concert added.

Members in the band and those hosting it are not gay, but the opening act lead singer, Michael Dieker is. He grew up in Topeka and says it's been tough.

“They protest my church, my high school, my civic theater group that I perform at, they are everywhere, everywhere as a reminder that your kind is hated.”

No hate this weekend at this concert event for Michael, his partner of three years and all his friends.

“I have friends that are gay friends that are bisexual, I went to school with a log of gay and bi people. They are no different they just have other sexual preferences,” Hall said.

“I’m a libertarian, so as far as I’m concerned what two people do in their bedroom; what five people do in their bedroom is their business,” Lessman said.

A feeling they wish that others had, to be able to open their minds and hearts to everyone.
They don't hate the Phelps’, they just don't agree and wish they would take their hate some place else.

“Get out of America man, just go some place else if you don't like it here then leave,” Namey said.
