BandAlternativeSinger/Songwriter

Indie Trip-Hop Alternative Swing: Bittybox combines computer sequencing and traditional instruments with stylistic influences from the 1940's, the 1960's and today.

Biography

Bittybox is the solo studio project of singer songwriter Vicki Silbert. The term bittybox comes from computer hacker slang for an old, slow, underpowered computer. This seemed an apt analogy for a digital audio project begun with no budget and minimal gear.

The "Smalltime" CD began on a home computer, using Digital Performer audio recording software. Eventually the tracks were ported into ProTools for recording session players and final mixes. Some illustrious musicians made guest appearances, including performances from drummer Jimmy Paxson, and legendary viola player Novi Novog.

Vicki's music career began on the fringes of the LA club scene during the Los Angeles punk rock movement. This was where she first found her voice as a singer songwriter. Over the years her songwriting has deepened and matured, but her music still retains that DIY attitude and rebellious spirit, refusing to be pigeonholed.

Lyrics

Smalltime

Written By: ©2007 Vicki Silbert

In exchange for her five minutes of fame
She didn't have to sell her soul.
What the man demanded was something
A little bit more earthly,
And she told him
To go to hell.

I'm a stubborn one.
I want control.
You cannot break me.
No I won't bend at all.
I'm a stubborn one,
I won't be sold.
No compromises.
Won't do what I'm told.

Armed with your songs and a flimsy guitar,
Pack all your stuff in your old beat-up car.
Take to the road where you sing out your soul.
The tragically hip take you into thier fold.

Now all the king's horses and all the king's men
Tell you to go along, tell you give in.
Talent is cheap and the business is hard.
But if you're a good-girl, they'll make you a star.

Cynics and critics and people with clout
Rape you with words and they fill you with doubt.
Don't bother wondering what that's about.
They'll chew you up and then spit you back out.

I'm a stubborn one.
I want control.
You cannot break me.
No I won't bend at all.
I'm a stubborn one,
I won't be sold.
No compromises.
Won't do what I'm told.

Let me remind you
To stay on your guard.
Some things in life make you stronger,
But some leave you scarred.
Caught in the middle between
Real life and her dreams.
She may be small—time.
But, that's more than it seems.

I'm a stubborn one.
I want control.
You cannot break me.
No I won't bend at all.
I'm a stubborn one,
I won't be sold.
No compromises.
Won't do what I'm told.

Ride

Written By: ©2007 Vicki Silbert

Wanna show you something
Out around the back.
It's something long and low,
It's shiny and it's black.

It's kind of flashy.
It's got a lot of style.
Been down alot of roads
And traveled lots of miles.

Turn the ignition.
Just hear that engine roar.
I'd like to show you
What those dual valves are for.

348 V-8
Equipped with Turbo Glide,
And if you're nice
I just might take you for a ride.

(Chorus)
Won't you come along riding in my car?
I know a special place that isn't very far.
Roll down the windows, wave at people as we pass.
You can even put your feet up on the padded dash.
And as we cruise along we'll turn the speakers on.
They'll play my favorite song but I don't wanna sing along.

It's a 2-door.
It's totally restored.
It's got a rag top and
A shag down on the floor.

It's got the wire wheels.
The power seats are nice.
Push—button stereo
And fuzzy wuzzy dice.

Wishbone suspension,
Red leatherette inside.
The Continental Kit
is very dignified.

It's got the fins in back.
Got chrome along the sides.
And if you're nice
I just might take you for a ride.

(Chorus)
Won't you come along riding in my car?
I know a special place that isn't very far.
We'll put the top down, wave at people as we pass.
You can even put your feet up on the padded dash.
And as we cruise along, we'll turn the speakers on.
They'll play my favorite song but I don't wanna sing along.

Joker

Written By: ©2007 Vicki Silbert

I don't know how it started
We came to be so disregarded
I thought that it was time for us to wake up
I thought that it was time for us to stand up
So then I stood up
And someone took my chair

The joke's on me
The joke's on me

They just keep telling me
The way it's gonna be
Everything for them
Nothing for me

Oh so full of promise
Living the gift that's cursed upon us
And if it leaves us broke and broken hearted
Well that's a shame.

We put the word out not to trust
That dotted line that's set before us
But only end up preaching to the chorus
That sings for free

The joke's on we
The joke's on we

They just keep telling me
The way it's gonna be
Everything for them
Nothing for me
