Black Flower

The all-star combo around saxophone player Nathan Daems satisfies us with a excellent first album containing a extraordinary mix of Ethiopique jazz, afro(beat) and blues. It is not an easy task, combining the typical 70s jazzy sound of Ethiopia (the country formerly known as Abyssinia) with the Fela Kuti-feel, originating on the other side of the african continent - especially not by a bunch of white guys who weren't even born then. But the musicians of Black Flower (who proved themselves earlier with projects like Antwerp Gypsy Ska Orchestra, The Valerie Solanas and FES) seamlessly succeeded in this task. We can hardly wait to se these gentleman's live. Tastyyyy!

Het all-star combo rond saxofonist Nathan Daems verblijdt ons op een bijzonder sfeervolle eerste plaat met een uitstekende mix van Ethiopiques jazz, afro(beat) en blues. Het is niet vanzelfsprekend om met name de vibe van de jazzy platen die in de jaren '70 in Ethiopië (the country formerly known as Abyssinia) en aan de andere kant van het continent door Fela Kuti werden gemaakt te vatten - en dan zeker niet door een stel bleekscheten die toen nog niet eens geboren waren. Maar de muzikanten van Black Flower (die eerder hun sporen verdienden bij o.a. Antwerp Gipsy Ska Orchestra, The Valerie Solanas en FES) zijn daar blijkbaar moeiteloos in geslaagd. Since the release of the five-track EP we have been waiting for this longplay debut album of Black Flower, the Ethio-jazz project around Nathan Daems. For the album Abyssinia Afterlife, Daems has got his inspiration out of the legend of Prester John (make sure to read the crazy story behind this record published on the website) making it sound like a feverish LSD-trip through the streets of the Addis Abeba, the capital of Etiopia. But Abyssinia Afterlife is more than Ethio-jazz: in songs like "Upwards" (with magnificent guitar play by Smokey Hormel) or "Again I lost it" the psychedelic Cambodian rock of 'Dengue Fever' comes to mind. The keys of Wouter Haest recall to keyboard player 'Ray Manzarek' from 'The Doors', especially on the songs "I threw a lemon at that girl" and "Winter". Black Flower presents you "only" nine songs on the album Abyssinia Aferlife, but most of the compositions are longer than five minutes, thus leaving us with a satisfied feeling.

Black Flower presents Abyssinia Afterlife on 20 april in De Centrale, Ghent and on 15 may in Arenbergschouwburg, Antwerp.

Op dit langspelerdebuut van Black Flower, het Ethio-jazz project van en rond saxofonist Nathan Daems, zaten wij al te wachten sinds we de vijf tracks op hun titelloze EP uit 2013 gehoord hadden. Voor Abyssinia Afterlife liet Daems zich inspireren door de legende van Prester John (zie ook Tommy T's The Prester John Sessions en lees zeker eens het geflipte verhaal achter de plaat op de website van Black Flower) en dat resulteerde in een album dat klinkt als een koortsige LSD-trip door de straten van de Ethiopische hoofdstad Addis Abeba (iets wat ondergetekende trouwens ook al opmerkte over In A Town Called Addis van Dub Colossus). Maar Abyssinia Afterlife is meer dan Ethio-jazz: in nummers als Upwards (met het schitterende gitaarspel van Smokey Hormel) of Again I Lost It is ook de psychedelische Cambodjaanse rock van Dengue Fever niet veraf en het toetsenspel van Wouter Haest roept af en toe herinneringen op aan het werk van The Doors toetsenist Ray Manzarek (I Threw A Lemon At That Girl, samen met Winter het enige nummer uit de EP dat ook op Abyssinia Afterlife staat). Black Flower serveert op Abyssinia Afterlife "slechts" negen nummers, maar daar zitten meerdere composities van meer dan vijf minuten tussen, dus met een onvoldaan gevoel zal dit album u zeker niet achterlaten.

Black Flower stelt Abyssinia Afterlife live voor op 20 april in De Centrale in Gent en op 15 mei in de Arenbergschouwburg in Antwerpen. - Tropicalidad.be - 6 april 2014

The music of Black Flower has been catalogued as so-called Ethiojazz or Ethiogroove, music born out of the legacy of pianist and vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke, the godfather of Ethiojazz. It is a mix of traditional Ethopique rhythms and melodies with Western pop, rock, funk and soul. Although the golden age of Ethiojazz lies a couple of decades behind us, we nowadays notice a revival - just like the afrobeat of West-Africa - attracting people who love danceable worldmusic.

Ping-pong
Being the pioneers in Belgium for this genre, Black Flower combines the Ethiopique legacy of the 60s and 70s with Western jazz, funk, soul and afrobeat.

"It is a kind of musical ping-pong", says saxophone player Nathan Daems to Cobra.be, "the Ethiopique musicians back then consulted what type of music was going on in the Western world, listening to the radio and to jukeboxes. Nowadays you get a revers movement of western musicians finding inspiration in Afrika or in this case in Ethiopia".

Nathan Daems has founded Black Flower two years ago. It was a challenging task finding the right musicians.
On Kornet: Jon Birdsong (Calexico, Beck, Think of One, Lisa van de Aa and Box). On Bass: Filip Vandebril (Antwerp Gypsy Ska Orchestra and Lady Linn). On the keys: Wouter Haest (Los Callejeros) and on Drums: Simon Segers (De Beren Gieren, Stadt, Nathan Daems Quintet).

(...) On the occasion of the celebration of 20 years Jazzlab Series, Black Flower is one of the twenty bands playing on friday 27 and saturday 28 September. If it's up to Nathan Daems and the other gentlemen from Black Flower it wil be a steamy party.

Aanstekelijke Ethiogroove van Black Flower

De muziek van Black Flower wordt wel eens ingedeeld bij de zogenaamde Ethiojazz of Ethiogroove, muziek in het verlengde van die van pianist en vibrafonist Mulatu Astatke, de peetvader van de Ethiojazz. Dat is een mengvorm van traditionele Ethiopische ritmes en melodieën met Westerse pop, rock, funk en soul. De hoogtijdagen van de Ethiojazz liggen al enkele decennia achter ons, maar lijkt momenteel - net zoals de afrobeat van West-Afrika - opnieuw opgang te maken bij liefhebbers van dansbare wereldmuziek.

Ping-pong
Black Flower is helemaal mee met die trip en combineert nu dat Ethiopische erfgoed van de jaren zestig en zeventig met Westerse jazz, funk en soul, maar ook met afrobeat.

"Het is een soort muzikaal ping-pong", zegt saxofonist Nathan Daems aan Cobra.be, "de Ethiopische muzikanten van destijds gingen te rade in het Westen, en wat er daar te horen was op de radio en in de jukebox. En nu krijg je de omgekeerde beweging waarbij groepen uit Europa en Amerika inspiratie vinden in Afrika."

Nathan Daems heeft Black Flower zo'n twee jaar geleden opgericht. Het was even zoeken naar de juiste bezetting maar nu is de groep klaar voor de opname van een eerste cd. Met op cornet Jon Birdsong (speelde o.a. bij Calexico en Beck, maar ook bij Think of One, Lisa Van der Aa en Box). De bassist is Filip Vandebril, ook actief bij Antwerp Gypsy Ska Orkestra en Lady Linn. Aan de toetsen zit Wouter Haest (Los Callejeros) en aan de drums Simon Segers (De Beren Gieren, Stadt, Nathan Daems Quintet).
