Black Lion - Survive (Ft. Ray Robinson & Testament) [Review]
JULY 05, 2019 IN MUSIC, RAP, HIP-HOP, CONSCIOUS
Rating: 4 out of 5
“True, hard hitting lyrics delivered in a meaningful flow and a touching chorus. This is one of those songs that will have different meaning for different people, but the magic of such writing is that it is widely relevant, and speaks to many. ”
— Travis Erwin (LA on Lock Blogger) - LA ON LOCK THE #1 SOURCE FOR UNDERGROUND HYPE IN LOS ANGELES
Canadian collective Black Lion release break through record, “Survive” featuring Testament and Ray Robinson.
Black Lion touches upon the universal and problematic themes of struggle, survival, and the know how to overcome it all. The record takes us back to the essence and offers hope through resolution of knowing one’s worth and weathering the most turbulent storms, “I’m overcoming more vices ready for the crisis.”
The hook awakens the soul while classic boom bap mixed with modern elements glorifies the warrior intact lyricism. Stream “Survive” above and connect with Black Lion on the web. - The Word is Bond Magazine - MSAVINO · JULY 19, 2019

Under The Radar: Black Lion – “Miles Away”
You know, one of the main reasons why I started this blog was so that I could feature lesser known hip hop artists. I wanted to help these passionate artists feel more appreciated. With the onslaught of mainstream hip hop releases this year, it’s been a bit difficult to remain true to that goal. Black Lion have recently given me reason to revisit that path, and it’s name is “Miles Away”.
Black Lion is a hip hop group from Toronto, led by brothers Rich and Heny. The two of them have been putting out music together over 6 years, and clearly have great chemistry together. Rich is the main producer of Black Lion, and Heny is one of the main emcees.
“Miles Away” also features Janel Sherise singing the hook, which is wonderful. Her voice is great, especially the layered sections. The chorus is very soothing and relaxing, even with the beat being fairly busy. I thought that both of the verses were strong lyrically. I don’t actually know which artist is on the first or second verse, but I really liked the energy of the second guy. The vocal inflections were a nice touch to add some spice to certain rhyme schemes.
Listen to “Miles Away” featuring Janel Sherise below, or on Black Lion’s Soundcloud page. If you like what you hear, you can always check out their new project, Free Association on Soundcloud and Spotify. Support Black Lion by downloading from iTunes or Amazon.

The Toronto collective Black Lion help take it back to that good old days with the soul-tinged, boom-bap single titled "Miles Away". Made up of blood brothers Rich Lindo and JR ‘Heny’ Lindo, the collective share their personal experience and struggles over a gloomy soundscape while emerging singer Janel Sherise solidify the sentiments with her angelic vocals. Although Rich Lindo is the collective’s Music Producer, "Miles Away" was produced by Tone Mason.
"Miles Away" is from their new project Free Association which can be purchased on Spotify: Apple Music: and Bandcamp - Earmilk (Tayo Odutola)
Toronto based hip-hop collective known as Black Lion help kick start this week with the release of their debut EP titled ‘Free Association‘. The EP is a follow up to their 2015 mixtape Black Lion Presents: The Prodigy and the Architect which earned them a Canadian Music Week Showcase. The collective is made up of producer Rich Lindo and emcee JR ‘Heny’ Lindo, brothers who officially began collaborating musically in early 2012.
On their new EP, the duo share with the world their own take on the hip-hop genre blending a wide range of influences and styles representative of Toronto’s culture and diversity. The 7 track project starts with the hard-hitting, cinematic “For The Glory” featuring 7even 2wenty 8ight which sets the tone of the EP. Tracks like “Overtime”, “never in my whole life” showcase different sides of the collective as they tackle different themes. Soulful gems like “So tired pt II” and “Survive” have a more personal feel to it and will definitely resonate deep with their poignant themes. Overall the sound is pretty solid, they mix soul, trap and classic boom-bap elements so no one is left out when it comes down to it. The features on here include Ray Robinson, Dukez, Gary B, Janel Sherise etc.

On Survive, Black Lion is able to lay down some intense bars with a haunting backing beat. Punchy lyrics and smart wordplay unite with something that could easily have came out of early Kanye or J. Dilla production. The pair of features here (Testament & Ray Robinson) are able to add a little variety. Whether it be the R&B-tinged vocals or a flow that builds upon the work of mid to late-oughts rapper, Survive is one of those efforts that slaps. Indelibly imprinting itself upon listeners, Black Lion’s current single has wheels to ride out through the end of summer. Black Lion’s newest single “Survive” is bound to become a hit. The track portrays the universal themes of struggle, survival and overcoming life’s challenges. From the current crisis in Sudan to the everyday struggle to make ends meet, be successful, or achieve a higher state of being and spiritual actualization, 'Survive' can be appreciated by a broad audience across all genders and ages. The instrumental has an uplifting feel to it and is complimented by fierce, conscious lyricism. With elements of traditional boom-bap as well as trap, this experimental piece exemplifies the versatility of Black Lion's sound. 'Survive' will give listeners an inner spark of confidence and motivation while they move though all types of life's events, even when times may be tough. - dopeFUTURE (Michael)
The Black Lion collective, founded by Rich Lindo, based in Toronto fuse rap, soul, reggae with beats from the golden era of hip-hop.
Survive is an uplifting and sunny-feeling track, focusing on the universal themes of struggle and survival: the crisis in Sudan; the everyday struggle to make ends meet; or an artist’s journey to success. The track features elements of traditional boom-bap, modern trap, and is a great example of what Black Lion can do. This is going on my summer playlist, it should go on yours.

Toronto duo Black Lion releases the Right Somebody (Remix)
When the old-school golden era of rap collides with soul, trap and reggae, you get Black Lion. We first covered the duo back in January when we posted their debut project, Free Association.
In a creative twist, the EP was distributed as a stunning audio-visual production. Each song was accompanied by a lyric video that captured its message perfectly. The list of collaborators includes Grammy-nominated production juggernaut Tone Mason, and soulful Toronto R&B artist Ray Robinson.
Their sound is undeniably versatile and is rooted in an awareness of relevant current, historical, and emerging global themes and trends, as well as an appreciation for the lighter moments in life.
“Right Somebody” is the second single that Black Lion has released this year. Just in time for the summer, it is a remix from last year’s EP that includes an improved production and new elements that give it a fresh sound.
One listen to this bumping track will have people falling in love on the dance floor. The song has a special meaning from the heart of Black Lion architect Rich Lindo.
Having just recently married the love of his life, Rich dedicates “Right Somebody” to his wife as “she deserves nothing less than the best.”
The Lindo brothers share and deliver that sentiment of love and treating your significant other in the best way possible. People all over the world can relate to this. With its revamped beat, soothing combination of hip-hop and reggae style, and melodious hook in the chorus, “Right Somebody” will have the bodies of listeners moving and grooving through the summer of 2019.
You can find “Right Somebody” on Apple Music, Spotify, and other digital streaming outlets.

Black Lion, including founder and artist/producer Rel "Rich" Lindo and up and coming artist Heny "JR" Lindo, is a collective of music talent that mixes R&B/soul with reggae beats demonstrated through their song "Go Against the Grain" featuring Zellust & Dukez. The rap sound of the song compliments a heavy back beat but contrasts female chanting that fills out the space of the sound. It's a song whose beat creates an enjoyable listen that still carries a hardened shell of hip-hop. The Toronto natives are performing at Canadian Music Week on May 7th. JR is currently working with Rich on a follow up to their 2015 mixtape titled Black Lion Presents: The Prodigy and the Architect; the follow up is tentatively titled The Beautiful Side. Black Lion Productions is a Toronto hip hop music collective and they present their latest track called Go Against The Grain. The track is by Black Lion duo Rel and Heny featuring two other affiliate artists; Zellust and Dukez. This is a hard hitting hip hop record with a raw and gritty feel to it. All artists go hard and focus on their lyrical abilities, which is something that the game is currently missing. It’s about standing up as a collective and grinding their way up with no fear for going against the grain. If you would like to catch them live and direct, you can see them at The Painted Lady on May 7th as a part of Canadian Music Week and May 14th at The Rockpile.
