Bio

Black 29 is taking the Wilmington Scene Worldwide!

“THEIR SONGS ARE A COMBINATION OF OLD-SCHOOL METAL RIFFS, WITHOUT THE CONSTANT GRIND, PUNCTUATED BY QUICK DRUM BEATS. ON TOP IS AN OVERLAY OF SUNG AND SCREAMED VOCALS, STRAYING SOMEWHERE BETWEEN FINCH OR SILVERSTEIN AND INTO AS I LAY DYING AND BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME. IT CUTS THE MIDDLE GROUND BETWEEN SCREAMO AND METAL….” BOOTLEG MAGAZINE 2008

Black 29 is Wilmington’s fastest rising band, recently signing with Big Banana Records. The five piece consists of Shane Rackley on vocals, Derek Schmidt and Max Allan trade the spotlight on guitars, Joe Shackleford is the bassist, and Andrew Hawkins is the drummer.

Each of the band members grew up in different lifestyles, all dreaming of the success they are now on the road to achieving. The bands’ early influences are diverse—citing artists like Pink Floyd, The Doors, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Bless the fall, Atreyu and Metallica—which easily explains the broad range of styles in Black 29’s distinct unique sound!

“THE SOUND OF BLACK 29 IS UNLEASHING ITSELF ON THE MUSIC SCENE. THEIR DRIVING GUITARS AND FULL DRUM SOUND REFLECT A HARDCORE, METAL INFLUENCE SIMILAR TO KILLSWITCH ENGAGE AND ATREYU.” THE BEAT MAGAZINE 2007

The fans are the biggest inspiration for Black 29. “There is nothing better than being on stage and looking out into the crowd and seeing people sing the songs we have written” says Shane. Andrew agrees that performing and helping people through music is “the most amazing feeling in the world.” Inspiration goes both ways, and Joe hopes to inspire listeners with the songs of Black 29. Derek says, “I hope to have some of those songs that remain around forever” Max echoes the band’s desire to touch people with their music: “I would love it if someone could listen to our record and really feel alive.”

The band may soon be getting their wish. With their album set to release in spring 2009, Black 29 is going nationwide. And they have the support of more than just their fans: "So many bands have made it on a national and even international level, now its Black 29’s turn to take our scene national!" says Roddy, a DJ at Rock105.5 legendary pure rock station. Looks like Wilmington’s favorite sons are ready to take on the world!

“WE HOPE TO BE THE FUTURE OF ROCK. WE TRY NOT TO FOCUS ON TODAY’S SOUND; WE ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH CREATING THE SOUND OF TOMMORROW…. WE LOVE TO PUT OUT MUSIC THAT WE LOVE. AND HOPE THAT THE FANS WILL LISTEN AND SHARE THAT BOND WITH US.” Black 29 In VILLAGE IDIOT MAGAZINE 2008
