"Black Beans and Hippie Liver Highlights Third Friday"

Black Beans and Hippie Liver is a band that should be on every music lover's must-see list. The trio played at art district venue The Box Office on February 19th. They not only attracted a large crowd, they kept the crowd wanting more.

Musically speaking, BB&HL is as difficult to categorize as they are to ignore. Their setlist is a seamless blend of every musical genre. In hooky, blues-infused jam "Fisherman," it is easy to find oneself singing along with the "La-dee-da's" in the chorus. Their ode to a friend, "Dario Dance," is a classic tango blended with psychedelic rock. The set even features a hard rock homage to Patrick Swayze! From any end of the spectrum, BB&HL is a crowd pleaser.

Fortunately for audiences, the three virtuous musicians don't take themselves too seriously. The band that may deserve to be full of themselves certainly isn't. They frequently joke with the audience, (and each other). It is also common to see them mingling with fans over a beer and a cigarette. For quality music that will keep audiences dancing or banging their heads (all sensibilities considered), BB&HL delivers.

Black Beans and Hippie Liver can be seen live at The Aruba Hotel, Turk's Bar & Lounge, Eastside Joe's, and The Freakin' Frog.

"Black Beans and Hippie Liver"

A musical Frankenstein stitched together with chunks of Cream, Santana and Frank Zappa, Vegas jam trio Black Beans and Hippie Liver lit up the outdoor stage next to Gypsy Den, proving not all wank-heavy bands have to sound like wet, boring noodles. They comprise a tight ensemble, locking into grooves that, while certainly psychedelic enough for the patchouli-scented hordes, are aggressive enough for rockers like me. I dig their original material—funky “Fisherman,” Latin-infused “Reggz,” and the (Joe) Satriani-shredding prog-fury of “The Max Song.” The band also wields an inspired, metal-edged cover of Primus’ “Tommy the Cat,” with Chris Hermosillo handling the zany spoken-word sections. With the stage’s Neon Reverb banner hanging by a thread, I felt at home amid a hundred others digging this great band. Caught a flying drumstick, too! - Jarret Keene, Vegas Seven Magazine

Rest in Peace Anthony Carapazza. Live performances are the back bone of Black Beans & Hippie Liver’s following, although countless hours of thought and effort are divulged strictly to the writing process. - Weekly Magazine
