Black Binder

Black Binder

New York City, New York, USA

A guitar & drum duo from Brooklyn, NY, Black Binder blends post-punk, indie, & art rock into their dynamic and moody sound. Using their minimal set up to their advantage, they embrace space between sounds with shifts in tempo & rhythm while adding depth & emotion through their female/male vocals.

In 2011 in Brooklyn, when a group of four musicians found themselves quickly whittled down to just two, Black Binder was born.  Left with only themselves, a drummer and a bassist, they formed a quick friendship and decided to continue to make music together.  Adam Black switched to guitar and Meredith Binder added a glockenspiel next to her drum kit and they took a risk and both started singing.

In a windowless practice room on what felt like a forgotten street, the energy and creativity of the city found its way into their sound. Pushed to be better by contemporaries like Wolf Parade and Warpaint, and inspired by the post-punk and indie greats of yesteryear, Black Binder set out to create a sound that was dynamic but moody, underscored with an autumnal gravity.  Using their minimal setup to their advantage, they wrote strong shifts in tempo and rhythm that embraced space between sounds.  They used their combined female and male vocals to add depth and emotion to their smart yet somber lyrics.

Black Binder released a digital demo of 3 original songs and 1 cover in January 2012.  The music has been compared to The XX as well as early Cat Power.  They played their first show at Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in March and have been working on new material and lining up more live shows ever since.
