"Black Cassette" - Black Cassette, V2 Benelux, 2011

Black Cassette: Sjoerd Bruil (vocals + guitar) - Pascal Deweze (bass) - Jeroen Stevens (drum)
The frontman and songwriter of this group is Sjoerd Bruil. Sjoerd was born in the Netherlands and moved to Antwerp in 2001 to try and make music he though they didn’t really make in his native country.
Sjoerd has played in Sukilove since 2004 and in 2008 he roamed the stages with Tim Vanhamel (Millionaire) his solo-project (where he provided a double shift with Black Cassette as support act). Since that same year he and the rest of Black Cassette have raised glorious confusion during sporadic concerts with Pawlowski, Mauro’s evil bigband. Furthermore, Sjoerd sang a duet with Gregory Frateur called ‘Flawless Daughter’ on the previous Dez Mona album. In 2010 he became part of a new group together with Tim Vanhamel and Pascal Deweze called Broken Glass Heroes.
For Black Cassette, Sjoerd has found quite an impressive rhythmsection:
Pascal Deweze, also known from Sukilove and ex-Metal Molly, plays bass. He is also active as producer and has besides the Black Cassette album also produced albums by The Van Jets, The Sore Losers and Galacticos!
Jeroen Stevens, also known from I Love Sarah, plays the drums (incl. a wok) like a maniac.
In 2007 an untitled debut EP featuring 5 songs was released independently. Now they’ve recorded their first full-length album in Studio Jezus, where besides Sukilove and Broken Glass Heroes groups like Creature with the Atombrain, Mauro & the Grooms and Tom Pintens have made recordings. In order to pay for the release, Sjoerd has volunteered as testperson in a medical study. Fortunately V2 Benelux was willing to release the record so further damages have not been made. The scars aren’t too bad.
The sound of Black Cassette is sober and raw, focusing on the vocals and angular, sometimes uneven rhythms. Blues, gospel, rock and tearjerkers schurken gemoedelijk tegen elkaar aan. Think of PJ Harvey, Prince, Nick Cave and Captain Beefheart.
This is what HUMO had to say about their second ever gig: "fat slabs of rock-‘n-roll filled with wolf traps and a guitar sound fit to build cathedrals on." (HUMO, 13-02-2006).
'Black Cassette' will be out on CD and vinyl on the 12th of september. The London-based ‘Jezus Factory’ label will provide a cassette release.
