"Blackcast “Anywhere” EP review"

The latest offering from Spacebar Recordings (produced by STEVE DEUTSCH, whose impressive resume includes early works with rock greats like Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Alice Cooper etc) looks set to pick up where unforgettable 90’s grunge outfits like The Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana left off. With the multi-talented KRIS JUNG in the captain’s seat, be sure to fasten your seatbelts and get ready to be assaulted by the live manifestation of your inner angst that is BLACKCAST. This LA quartet will shake you, break you and make damn sure you remember who they are – while backing themselves up with the familiar old school feel -that we missed so much- flavored with a hint of modern rock.

These four solid tracks are tightly packed with aggression at its rawest, each playing on the band’s strengths – fervent yet sincere at the same time. Opening with heart-thumping drums and blistering guitars, “Inside Out” sees JUNG exerting every emotional fiber in him to deliver a brutally honest message [For all the white horses you breathe/You just want to be lazy/Just tell yourself you’re always right and I’ll tell you you’re crazy] If the thought of “Gosh, I’d hate to be the subject of his songs” doesn’t immediately hit you, check your pulse again. “It made me think of the first guitar player in the band…biggest hypocrite ever. The words started out about him and broadened from there”, says JUNG.

“Averine” gets more politically charged [Money makes you strong and loud/Remember, remember nothing lasts forever/Burned up little pieces falling/Deceived without delay/Follow our leaders on a road paved with ashes and the secret to betray] with acid-laced words directed at “one particular US leader”. To JUNG (and pretty much every other normal human being), war makes no sense. “I don't like how we were lied to about WMDs. It's a lot of wasted human life for something, like money and oil, that won't last.”

The beginning of “Anywhere” is heavily reminiscent of Incubus’ earlier material, with its signature fast-paced rock punches, drums-thrashing, and catchy riffs – an instant fist-pounding anthem. With lyrics like “Anywhere is better than here/Dead in the comfort of your love”, there is no doubt JUNG had been experiencing one of life’s lowest lows. Chin up dude, she wasn’t worth it anyway…

While certain parts of “Lovely” is comparable to Nirvana with a power guitar solo, the most personal track of the EP focuses on the importance of family values: remembering our roots. JUNG had written it in order to “overcome the resentment of alcoholism, beatings with leather belts, wooden spoons and straight shit talking”, and lets the words of anguish and guilt all pour out in confession – something everyone can relate to.

In a nutshell, all four hi-tempo tracks will certainly feel right at home on a WWF compilation – they’ve got the energy, and definitely not a band to be messed with. The adorable spaceman album cover is probably a tongue-in-cheek decoy – though I may be wrong. Good stuff can’t be faked: do yourself a favor and make sure the volume is cranked up.

Bio

BLACKCAST is the new brainchild of KRIS JUNG, founding member of the Alternative / Hard Rock bands the SHORCRACKERS OF BETHLEHEM and RADIO FREE AMERICA.

KRIS wrote, sang and played all of the instruments, with the exception of KEVIN J. DRAKE (30 Seconds to Mars, The Hopps) who added some lead guitar and STEVE DEUTSCH (Spacebar Recordings, founder of the Micro Plant, LA) who played bass on “LOVELY”.

“ANYWHERE was produced by STEVE DEUTSCH (Graham Lindsey, Mountain Con) and mixed by BJORN THORSRUD (Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan).

When the Shoecrackers of Bethlehem played LA’s Troubadour they set the attendance record for an unsigned band where they went on to open for Incubus. In 2001 they metamorphosized into RADIO FREE AMERICA and released an early song “Train” to a compilation for Kid Antrem Music.

MUSIC CONNECTION honored RFA with a slot in their TOP 25 DEMOS of 2002. They were speaking of their 10 song CD “THE SONG THAT SAVED MY LIFE” when M.C. magazine said they “..manage to combine muscular hard rock with punky-pop rock..impressive guitar attack and whiplash vocals”.

KRIS is one hell of a beatboxer as well. He is featured in the definitive beatbox documentary “BREATH CONTROL”. His performance “LIQUID BUTTERFLY” is included in the beatbox compilation album “The HUMAN ELEMENT” (High Times/108 Records) where Tom Doggett of Rap Reviews.com hailed it as “the best song on the album because of its musical depth.” Kris has been seen opening up for BIG DADDY KANE, KOOL MOE DEE and STYLES of BEYOND.

BLACKCAST is painting the roots of alternative rock with modern colors and is currently locked in the studio working on his next release due to be out in the summer of ’07.
