Bio

The 2007 Global Green Pre-Oscar Party signaled the emergence of an innovative new band into the scene. It was Blackcowboy’s first high profile appearance, one that would put their name on the industry map. A nomination for Alternative Song (Time) of the year at the 17th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards soon followed, as did a feature on 944 magazine’s music issue and heavy rotation on influential Los Angeles radio station, Indie 103.1 of Lukas, a gritty yet melodic single from the soundtrack to the film Gardener of Eden, the 2008 Lukas Haas vehicle produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.

It began simply, in a Los Angeles neighborhood nearly two decades ago, where the musical sensibilities of Jonah Johnson (vocals) and Richard “Pookie” Woods (Keyboards) collided, and formed an early incarnation of the band, influenced by their love of music ranging from country, rock to hip hop. Nick Pavey (Drummer), Sean Curtis (Guitar), and Jason Weeks (Bass) joined the band in December 2006, and completed the circle. Their notoriety climbed very quickly and in only a few months they found themselves in the midst of the Los Angeles scene, suddenly being compared to musical visionaries like Keane, Snow Patrol, U2 and Radiohead. The Blackcowboy sound ranges from piano-rock, acoustic-electric guitar driven, and flirts with a garage, slightly edgy rock sound.

They have since built a strong following in Hollywood and beyond as they continue to play in legendary LA staples like The Viper Room, The Roxy, The Gig Hollywood, Molly Malones, The House of Blues, and the El Rey Theatre, in addition to high profile events like the London Games Festival in Trafalgar Square, Global Green Pre-Oscar Party and influential LA fashion shows. The band has also continued to lend their sound to seminal new films, such as the development of With You song for the film My Sister’s Keeper, starring Cameron Diaz, Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusak, for New Line Music (where Jonah also has a cameo). The band had the songs Lukas and Come On accompany the Warner Bros. Pictures film, Rest Stop: Don’t Look Back, out in 2008. Blackcowboy recently completed a video to their hot single Come On starring Gisele Bundchen, directed by Kevin Connolly, which premiered on MySpace in mid-November and has since garnered over 465,000 plays between MySpace and YouTube.
