Bio

BIO NOTES: Family from Trinidad and Tobago; father was a drummer in Caribbean/R&B group for over 20 years; first album made at 18, using 'pause-record' method with 2 tape recorders, some instruments and a headset that doubled as a microphone; first performing band was called TriBaj; later, joined band Taste of Madness to record the "Get Ready" album, on which he wrote, performed, and co-produced 3 songs. One of his signature sounds is 'rockso', or urban calypso, based on the original music of Trinidad and Tobago -- it has the old-school focus on meaningful, clever lyrics, hooks, and instrumentation, but with a futuristic feel, using new sounds with the trademark Trini sounds of steel drums, 'engine room' steel percussion, and other instruments. Has balanced his repertoire by penning R&B, hard rock, jazz, movie score and other genres.

What sets Black Dragon apart? A keen focus on lyrics, song structure, song concepts, strong performance, visual appeal, 'never the same song twice' approach.

INTERESTING NOTE: Except for the guitar, self-taught on all instruments and technology used to self-record his albums, including 'the riddim x LP'.

FILM CREDITS: Various background work in movies (the upcoming "Man of the Year" with Robin Williams, "Mean Girls"), TV shows ("Tilt" with Michael Madsen, etc.), commercials (Budweiser, an internet dating service, etc.) , music videos (Ashanti, "Rain on Me", etc.), and a prominent speaking role in an infomercial (a men's shaving product, 'The Blade').

PRODUCTION CREDITS: Wrote, performed, and co-produced tracks on "Get Ready" album by band Taste of Madness; handled all duties -- writing, performing, and producing -- his "the riddim x LP" EP; in radio, he produced ads for Carleton University's CKCU FM Black History Month "Shades of Blackness" all-weekend marathon. He is an avid web publisher of websites and blogs, and strives to find new, innovative ways to promote artists on the World Wide Web.

Influences: the original, 'old school' Trinidadian calypsonians (Lord Melody, Sparrow, Executor, the Mighty Terror, Black Stalin, Black Prince, Black Sage, David Rudder, Lord Nelson, etc.), R&B: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Prince; RAP: Jay-Z, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, NWA, others; JAZZ: Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Duke Ellington, Don Cherry, Marcus Roberts, the cool jazz/be-bop era, etc.; ROCK: Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Van Halen and Metallica, Coldplay, U2, others; OTHER: his own sense of innovation.

INTERESTING FACT: Has been confused for several popular singers and actors, which he attributes to simply being recognized by some people by some of his work.
