Breaking up (with the dead) is hard to do, but for Anthony Janicki (a.k.a. AJ Skull) a parting of ways with his Calgary-based horror punk band, Conniving Cadavers, was just the motivational shot in the arm he needed. Primed to match his mettle against that of bassist Glen Murdock (Sanity in Numbers) and, shortly thereafter, drummer Steve Richter, lead singer/guitar player Janicki launched a new outfit under the ominous moniker, Black Earth. - Beatroute Calgary

Black Earth are a Calgary based rock quartet, formed in late 2009 with the intention to marry the sounds of Judas Priest with the Distillers. Known for their high energy stage presence and their affinity for smashing televisions mid-show, Black Earth have gained a strong following across Western Canada.

Founding members of the band include Erika Leah and Anthony Janiki, who illustrate their dysfunctional band relationship on stage with theatrical antics and witty banter. Erika not only provides vocals for the band that are robust enough to contend against the strongest of iron lungs, but she also gives the audience an appealing visual aesthetic to focus on as her male bandmates bumble around behind her. While Anthony may be a close contender in the visual realm, all beauty is forgotten when he smashes bottles over his head on stage and lets the blood drip onto his Jackson Flying V guitar. Bloody or not, Anthony can shred with the best of them and rips solos that have been known to make knees weak. Tyler Kocian is the newest addition to the band, adding bass lines to the mix that are both funky and steady at the same time. Backing all of them up is Steve Richter on percussion, who uses his classical training to add rhythmic flare to the otherwise rock-centric stylings of the group. Combined, these four create music that is both catchy and aurally challenging all at once.

With one EP and two full-length albums already released, Black Earth are planning to release another EP entitled One More Life which they know will be their best release yet. Their latest full-length gained them attention by local press including Audio Distortion Magazine and BeatRoute Magazine, and also inspired a vigorous touring schedule that took them from Victoria to Regina and everywhere in between. With hard work and a punk rock mentality, Black Earth are proving to be a regular fixture in Western Canada’s musical jungle.
