Bio

Since their inception in the Spring of 2001, Black Maria has led the Heavy Rock Movement in New Mexico. It started when long time Underground musician, Brian Banks, whose resume includes the first band from New Mexico signed to Sub-Pop Records, BigDamnCrazyWeight, as well as regional favorites, Fractured, began a collaboration with long time Punk Rock and Underground fixture, Gordy Andersen. Andersen’s musical credits include founding member of seminal hardcore band, Jerry’s Kidz, and later with early Alternative Rock pioneers Cracks In The Sidewalk. Banks and Andersen had been friends and even label mates (Resin Records) for over a decade, yet they had not collaborated in a musical project together. A mutual respect for each other’s style and a longing to get back to the business of rocking, Andersen and Banks decided to join forces. Their love of rock music and specifically things on the Heavy end of the spectrum, combined with Banks’ song structure vision was the impetus of what would become Black Maria.

A couple of months of Banks and Andersen working on material, led to the next step; forming the band. Former Fractured guitarist, Terry Sells was actually sharing a house with Banks. The basement was being used as a “jam room” where local musicians gathered for occasional band practice and general rocking out. One of Terry’s regular partners in these sessions was his younger brother, drummer Brent Sells. With Terry’s incredible knowledge of the guitar, and his seemingly endless supply of original, heavy riffs, it was natural for Banks and Andersen to ask him to join the collaboration. Not to mention that his brother Brent, is an ace musician in his own right and top flight drummer. The Sell’s brothers excepted the invitation and the four got down to some serious song writing.

It wasn’t long before it was obvious these four were on to something. They had composed an entire set of music, and realized that like it or not, they were a band. All that was lacking was a vocalist. After a failed attempt with one person and much wondering and speculation, once again the answer was living in the same house as Banks and Sells; their other roommate, Marc Crovella. Marc, was a former Austin Texas resident and former member of Vrom, an Austin Rock band. Crovella, primarily a guitarist, agreed to give the vocal duties a try. In no time he had developed both a unique, accessible vocal style as well as showing himself a strong lyricist. Black Maria was complete.

Since then, Black Maria has garnered rave reviews for their powerful, energetic live performances, locally as well as in Arizona and Texas. They have shared the stage with a veritable “Who’s Who” in the world of Heavy/Stoner Rock music. The list includes such heavy hitters as, Nebula, The Atomic Bitchwax, High On Fire, Bongzilla, Weedeater, Bad Wizard, Yob and many, many more. All who have shown much support, respect and enthusiasm for Black Maria.

A current mainstay of the Albuquerque live music scene, Black Maria enjoys a healthy relationship with local club owners. Always able to draw a crowd, regardless of the day of the week, Black Maria’s fan base grows with each new show. The original, yet accessible songs have an across the board appeal.
