Biography

Exception to the rule? Perhaps. Would you believe that nowadays a young up-and-coming band likes to pattern itself on Neil Young and the singer-/songwriter scene of the sixties and seventies? Black Rust like their instruments acoustic (2 guitars, double bass, piano, mandolin, blues harp, accordion, percussions, drums) and their music is timeless. Devoted to acoustic rock as a main style, the five guys in their mid twenties vary between folk and country - sometimes bearing even a faint resemblance to pop music. After many concerts throughout Germany (some of them together with Tomte, Portugal. The Man, The Kilians, Chris & Carla, John Watts or at the Haldern Pop Festival) they eventually recorded their first big album in autumn 2007, produced by Robin Proper-Sheppard (Sophia, The God Machine) and mixed by Kenny Jones (The Smiths, Billy Bragg, Oasis). "Medicine & Metaphors" was released in January 2009 on Strange Ways Records / Indigo. Black Rust stands for honest handmade music and timeless compositions not being afraid of deep emotion or even melancholy.

"The quintet from Ahlen/Westphalia (Germany) has created a beautiful Americana, pub rock and folk album with the support of Robin Proper-Sheppard (Sophia)." (Rolling Stone)

"With Medicine & Metaphors we have the first aspirant for the German Americana record 2009." (Musikexpress)

"Perhaps Black Rust will become the same for the Americana, country and folk scene, as Get Well Soon have been for the indie scene since last year - the new poster child." (melodie & rhythmus)

"Great piano ballads, poignant campfire romantic, hymnal uptempo songs." (cdstarts.de)

"And if there is a fair world out there these guys should break every heart starting with the indie girl to the housewife through to the rocker hard as a bone." (terrorverlag.de)

Everything's Fading

Written By: Jonas Künne

Everything is fading
All colors turn to sand
What’s the root of this position?
I can't tell you, man

The mermaid keeps me drowning
I am just a prisoner of you
What's the sense in dying here?
Oh come on, tell the truth
Come on, tell the truth…

The painter draws a sign of love
I'd follow if I could
The big one saw my tears falling
I'm left, misunderstood
Left misunderstood…

Every song I used to know
Reminds me of you
Every song I used to know
Reminds me of you

Everything is fading
All colors turn to sand
What's the root of this position
I can't tell you, man

Every sound, it bores me now
Yeah, and even laughing hurts
What's the sense in dying here
I think it's rain again
I think it's rain again

Every song I used to know
Reminds me of you
Every song I used to know
Reminds me of you

Heartache. Now!

Written By: Jonas Künne

I woke up in the doorway
With all my money spent
Yesterday was good for drinking
With demons, heaven sent

So I get up in the evening
It hurts too much to move
The first thing that I saw here
Was a licker bottle, used

And I'm looking for some justice
So that I can smile and I
Think I have to do it
I haven't done it for a while

And all that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache

I'm walking to my favourite bar
Yeah, where I used to sleep
To knock down some things that kill
Cause it has some soul to keep

Only empty glasses broken
Here on the kitchen floor
Party tonight ended
But somehow we need more

So we're looking for some justice
So that we can smile and I
Think we have to do it
We haven't done it for a while

And all that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache

My friends try hard to pick me up
Yeah, drinks do nice with pain
The best day of my life was
When tomorrow never came
So I'm finally awake again
Forgetting everything
Destroying things that I adore
Killing people in a dream

So you're looking for a reason
To try and make me smile and I
Think you have to do it
You haven't done it for a while

And all that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache now
But I admit...
Loving it

Yeah, I think I'm gonna die right now
And I'm gonna die alone
Be sure that I won't come back
I don't wanna sing for you
I will never sing for you
No more, no more, no more, no more
No more, no more, no more, no more..

And all that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache now
All that's left is heartache..

Overdose

Written By: Jonas Künne

You know I've been blind
I saw you on my side my mind
Why is it turning
While my head is still burning
And I am so high, high

Would you please come
Let me overdose on your smile
Would you please sit down
Though I am disguised as a clown
And I am so bleached, here

Why do they leave
This town has been good to me, baby
Why am I running
In circles I am spinning
And I can’t breathe, here

Now I sit in this room
Full of numb fools
And I am waiting for you to love me
But no one, no one, no one
Loves me too soon

New Year's Day

Written By: Jonas Künne

New Year’s Day

I watch your parents throwing firecrackers in the night
Christmas is over and you are so completely out of sight

This is New Year’s Day
What are you feeling?
This is New Year’s Day
I'm staring at the ceiling

This is New Year’s Day
Nothing has changed
This is New Year’s Day
I'm quite the same

The post office is closed, I'm fucked
Answers blow through town
After the show I'm looking for you
But you are never around

Are you happy now?
This dusty sound
Are you happy now?
I'm losing grip on solid ground

This is New Year’s Day
Nothing has changed
This is New Year’s Day

All Christmas lights are fading away
I light a cigarette and go to bed
Why don’t you just disappear right now out of my head?

I'm trying to wake up
Are you here?
I'm trying to wake up
Come on lay down here

This is New Year’s Day
Nothing has changed
This is New Year’s Day

This is New Year’s Day
What are you feeling?
This is New Year’s Day
I'm staring at the ceiling

Silent Lament

Written By: Jonas Künne

Silent Lament (BLACK RUST)

Nobody is listening
To your silent lament
Nobody wants to
But I cannot stand

Nobody is waiting
On the roads you go alone
So, please hold on
Hold on

You live in this town
In a new created hiding
Down where the cold wind blows
And, I guess, the sun is never shining

And for the perfect song
You’d be the perfect queen
With all your tattooed secrets
For no one to see

Don’t burn your walls around you
Start hiding your eyes
There is so much love inside you
Keep it for you for a little while
Keep it for you for a little while

Now, I watch you sitting
On that table alone
Reading all the bad news
To know what’s going on

And maybe a teardrop
Is running down your face
When you see that all the bad shit
Is following your traces

Oh, please let me tell you
That every love dies
And all the sweet kisses
Turn into lies
So don’t start acting
And don’t run away
Because I’m still here, waiting
To deny what I say

Don’t burn your walls around you
Start hiding your eyes
There is so much love inside you
Keep it for you for a little while
Keep it for you for a little while

Keep waiting
Keep waiting
Keep waiting
Keep waiting
I’ll always keep waiting
Keep waving
Keep waving
