Black Swan

Black Swan's dark, progressive indie rock makes excellent use of post-rock and goth-rock touchstones, creating a moody, atmospheric sound all its own. Reid Hardaway's nimble, heavily reverbed arpeggios counter-balance Courtney Vincent's piano structures perfectly, and Hardaway's tasteful use of delay recalls early British shoegazers Ride. And let's not forget the rhythm section, the powerful combination of bassist Joe Greene and drummer Daniel Wilson. With a sparse yet subtly propulsive sound, Columbia's Black Swan avoids easy categorization. The piano-laced foundation of minor chord melodies forces the band to focus its energy on the darker side of the pop construct. Vocalist Courtney Vincent sounds both urgent and plaintive, singing unpredictably off-kilter melodies as compared to the music. Four demos are available...ranging from the beautiful, haunting, and aptly named "Melancholia" to the more straightforward, driving dark pop of "Holding Out." Black Swan is a local (Columbia, SC) band who I had the pleasure of seeing this weekend. As I watched the band I could tell they were still trying to adapt in a live setting. Still, I was shocked to learn after the show that it was only the band’s second performance together. That fact left me even more impressed with the band’s expansive and engaging sound. Black Swan may only be in their infancy but the sky is the limit. The band has already recorded a five song EP which they were graciously giving away for free this weekend. - W. Miller
