BLAKE CARRINGTON’S BIOGRAPHY
"I'm Focused Man"
By Nicola Dawson

It’s rare that in this city of many cultures and musical varieties that we come across young men, especially young black men, who are unique in the way they perceive the ever expanding Hip Hop culture. Hip Hop is not just music. It is a culture on its own that transcends barriers of time and languages.

Enter a young man named "Blake" (Born Blake Gabriel). At 18 years of age, this young brother has lyrical skills that resemble a Mohammed Ali punch, quick and to the point. At 18, Blake bears the humbleness and drive of young Nas, highly confident and extremely focused. Not once does he hesitate to answer a question and his intellect is evident in his words. What’s unique is that he knows that what he is doing has been done before. Blake is not afraid to admit that it’s not original. He places emphasis that relaying a message is all about the way the sender presents it. Lets call him the Mailman because his rhymes are delivered postmarked with the sharpness of a sword, cutting deep into anyone listening. To top it all off, Blake who holds the current "Knockout Kings" Freestyle title gives deep love and respect to those who paved the way for him, not only in Canada (Rascalz, Ghetto Concept, Julie Black, KardinalOfficail,) but also to the pioneers of Hip Hop (Run DMC, Rakim, Nas, Jay Z, Biggie, Eminem, Tribe Called Quest, OutKast and Kanye West). This Torontonian native has perfected the art of quick thinking and manifesting his words into an impactful punch that leaves anyone listening wide eyed and open mouthed (he has no problem rocking the crowd with Mum in the audience too!!) Audiences are easily won over when he takes the stage, wooed by his boyish image and his rock solid lyrical confidence.

At the age of five he began to juggle semantics, and armed himself with a lyrical weapon of choice. His father was a rapper and helped uncover Blakes' raw talent at various local shows. Blake tried not to get caught up in the lifestyle by using his music as an escape.

"Make do with what is dealt to you and use your mind as your weapon"

Blake attributes his success to CONFIDENCE. His numerous titles and presentations are evident that there is no holding back for this young cat...

"Live everyday like it is your last"

Blake attributes his drive to his mum, his dad and his crew YBE. Amongst his street crew are rising stars: K-Double, Crysis the Kidd, and C View, K-Double who is Blake’s younger brother is on the verge of letting Toronto know of his presence on the scene. This is not the last we will hear of Blake, “Blake the Striver” is going to be around for a while. “Blake the Lyricist” will be right behind him and most important of all “Blake the Confidant” will always be there when you're getting a little too comfortable with free styling. He’ll be ready to grab the microphone and show you what the real art of free styling is all about.

"It takes heart, a strong mind and a strong ego to get back out there after someone has criticized you, and show them that there is a reason they don’t like you, you stand out and as long as you stand out, you’ve left a lasting impression"
-Blake 2003
