Reach Out

Written By: Bliss Bowen

REACH OUT
Written by Bliss Bowen

You are not forgotten
You feel stranded in your bedroom world
Mem’ries fade now like your helpless body curled
Your tears burn like stars but you won’t be forgotten
Believe

I won’t lie to you
Where you’re going’s no place I can be
Night is coming no dawn you’ll ever see
Solitude’s your terror I won’t lie to you
Reach out and believe

CHORUS: Reach out (Reach out)
Reach out (Reach out)
Oh, reach out
Reach out (Reach out)
Reach out (Reach out)
Oh, reach out

When your speech deserts you
I’m just one more stranger that you see
There’ll be kind hands to lift your dignity
Tuck these words in your heart when your mind deserts you
Reach out and believe

CHORUS (repeat)

You won’t be forgotten

House on Exeter Avenue (A Christmas Song)

Written By: Bliss Bowen

HOUSE ON EXETER AVENUE
(A CHRISTMAS SONG)
By Bliss Bowen

It’s just a simple bell of painted tin
Gold with mistletoe on the end
Grandma hung it in the doorway every year
That meant that Santa Claus was on his way
“Granddad pick me up, make it play!”
He’d grin, lift me high in mem’ries I hold dear

Troll that ancient Yuletide carol
Measure worth in value kind
Fast away those old years pass through
Like freeway lights in my rearview
That bell plays “Deck the Halls” and years unwind
Back to Christmastime
In the house on Exeter Avenue

His pipe and bourbon breath, sweet Grandma’s lace
Advent candles and saying grace
They took Mom ‘n’ me when Daddy disappeared
Piano hymns, handshakes and harmony
Peace on earth starts right here with me
By their humble ways and lessons I was reared

Troll that ancient Yuletide carol
It sings through my history
Fast away those old years pass through
Like freeway lights in my rearview
That bell’s got bangs and dents now just like me
But it still spins me
To the house on Exeter Avenue

Instrumental break

Real peace still starts with what I say and do
And that golden bell
Spins me home
Back to Christmastime
In the house on Exeter Avenue

Dignity

Written By: Bliss Bowen

DIGNITY
By Bliss Bowen

Smiling stranger looked me in the eye down on Sunset today
He wore a Moses beard asked for kindness please
I dropped coins in his cup and he turned away
Just another tale untold
Just another hungry soul
Holding out and holding on
Trying to claim a little dignity
Dignity

My friend Mare’s stitching dresses 9 to 9, getting paid on the sly
Toes lines of compromise hoping not to fall
Boss man pockets her key she tries not to cry
Just another daily toll
Just another angry soul
Holding out and holding on
Trying to claim a little dignity
Dignity

Could be a simple handshake, could be a shared meal
Could be an open door or maybe just lending an ear

Madison to Cairo it’s the same headlines unfolding on the wing
My neighbor’s shelves are bare now the bank’s foreclosed
We broke bread today it don’t change a thing
Just a couple prayers ‘n’ rolls
Just a couple hopeful souls
Holding out and holding on
Trying to claim a little dignity
Dignity
Simple dignity
It isn’t easy
Dignity
Show some dignity …. Dignity

Hanging Out the Clothes

Written By: Bliss Bowen

HANGING OUT THE CLOTHES
By Bliss Bowen

Shaking out the folds
Hanging out the clothes
Listening to the wind scrape leaves against the pewter sky
There’s light beyond the gate
Is there time it’s getting late
Passing crow grabs hold these thoughts like thread & answers … why

Inside you nod by your TV, and I read in my chair
20 years of resentment hang unvoiced in the air
I can’t forgive you for the man that you will never be
And I can’t forgive myself for not choosing to be free

I used to try so hard like a stripper dressed for church
Never really changed just spun dreams t’bind the hurt
Everything we seemed to share just pulled us slow apart
We have both become strangers to my restless stubborn heart

Shaking out the folds
Hanging out the clothes
Listening to the wind scrape leaves against the pewter sky
There’s light beyond the gate
Is there time is it too late
Passing crow grabs hold these thoughts like thread & answers …

What you do choose to remember, what you choose to forget
Is how you cradle a heart ‘n’ define love’s success
But there’s not much that we forget or ever once agree
Like your embroidered tales of times I witnessed differently

How many times have I sewn this poor shirt’s hem and tears
Why bother anymore it’s like a tired gambler’s prayers
I am reaching blind for words like a blanket in the cold
All I find is raw silence and that old crow’s thread to hold

Shaking out the folds
Hanging out the clothes
Passing crow grabs hold these unstitched thoughts & says … goodbye
Goodbye

Right Where I'm Supposed to Be

Written By: Bliss Bowen

RIGHT WHERE I’M SUPPOSED TO BE
By Bliss Bowen

Went to the church but the door it was locked
Swung by the bar but I quit the sauce
Tried goin’ home but I done lost my key
The gal in the mirror she just laughed at me

CHORUS:
But I’m right here, right now
Right where I’m supposed to be
Yeah, I’m right here, right now
Right where I’m supposed to be

Trapped in a funhouse, oh, who should I see
Sigmund Freud peerin’ in at me
Hang with some friends and they act like I’m strange
‘s’All got me thinkin’ it’s time for change

BRIDGE: Don’t know where I’m goin’
Or how I got where I am
They say God howls when we make plans
Well He must be cryin’
I give Him so many laughs
Try pushin’ my luck, I get kicked in the can

CHORUS / Instrumental

Speedin’ my way down delusion’s trail
Hit some roadblocks and I land in jail
Rushin’ to live those elusive dreams
Forgettin’ nothin’s ever quite what it seems

REPEAT BRIDGE/ CHORUS x2
